SPOILER Alert: What could Violet have told Mickey

What kind of story could Violet have made up to tell Mickey on his return to the apartment. She wouldn't have had a lot of time to figure it out. I've thought about it awhile and can't figure it out.
Did Caesar have a plan? Did it go wrong somehow?
Why didn't he run away immediately? Did he have some way of buying time?
What about Johnny's apartment? Is that just a coincidence? Or was that somehow linked to the idea of blaming Johnny?
Why did he call Mickey?
Was she ever tied up?
Did she make the phone call?
Where did Caesar go? Why didn't he take his car?

Please could you rephrase the questions in to understandable questions ?. Which scenes and situations are you referring to ?.

reply

Mickey was infatuated with Violet. As long as the story was minimally plausible, he'd have bought it. In no way would he have thought she made off with the money. What's more, although bright on her own, with Corky's help she could've come up with a story that he'd have bought wholesale, just like the one they sold to Caesar.

In the end, you're left to fill in the gaps.

Mickey will receive a big surprise when he opens the briefcase !!.

reply

Why would he be surprised? He thinks Caesar ran with the money so he knows it's not in briefcase.

Mickey never made it to the apartment. Obviously Violet met him downstairs, cried a bit, and told Mickey that Caeser beat her and then ran off with the money. There's no reason for Mickey to go up and look at the apartment. Mickey says, "We'll find him no matter where he goes."

No. There is no plausible series of events that could have happened between Caesar dying and the women getting away with the money without the mob suspecting Violet's involvement.

Mickey would HAVE to have made it to the apartment, UNLESS Violet had lied to him and never told him about the bodies in the apartment when he arrived that night. If that were the case, there would be several mysteries for the mob to solve:

1) Where is the money?
2) Where is Caesar?
3) Where are the mob boss, his son, and the other gangster?
4) Why did Caesar lie about the 3 dead gangsters being alive and in the hospital following a car crash which never happened?
5) Who ransacked Johnnie's apartment and why?
6) What was Vi's knowledge of, and/or participation in, Caesar's actions, and what was the time frame of everything she knew about and did regarding Caesar's actions?

There would have been so many serious unanswered questions that the mob would HAVE to come into Caesar's condo and thoroughly search it for any clues that might help them answer these unanswered questions.

There really is no story possible that Violet could have told Mickey that would keep her from being suspected as being complicit in the heist. The plot hole between Caesar's death and Violet's moving away is left for us to imagine, but I cannot imagine anything that could have resulted in the ultimate resolution of the plot with Violet being able to get away with the money and away from the mob and not being under suspicion from the mob. Totally impossible.

mickey was not just in love with her... he was a slave of her.

besides that... the mob was never shown as that imaginative, intelligent and detective-like ;-)

violet could have shown mickey her wounds in her face to generate compassion...
besides that, throughout the whole film she was the shown as ultimatively naive and innocent, too dumb and too sexy to be too smart.
her role was just perfect...
(i had an ex-girlfriend... she was just like her... totally seductive and the most sneaky girl on earth. you can laugh about this but i just smilie when i see this movie... it is perfect!)

i really wouldn't consider it as a plothole...

the premise of the movie was, to be in his own prison of lies... this was also shown in the film language as it played just in one appartement... and having the evidence and hints all around there (next appartement) is just a sign for the perfect screenwriting :D

reply

1) Where is the money?
Vi tells him that Caesar took it.

2) Where is Caesar?
Caesar ran away with the money.

3) Where are the mob boss, his son, and the other gangster?
Caesar killed them and Micky took care of their bodies later.

4) Why did Caesar lie about the 3 dead gangsters being alive and in the hospital following a car crash which never happened?
Cause he wanted to run away with the money.

5) Who ransacked Johnnie's apartment and why?
Caesar did it, to make it look like the Karpella family did it.

6) What was Vi's knowledge of, and/or participation in, Caesar's actions, and what was the time frame of everything she knew about and did regarding Caesar's actions?
Everything happened that night and Caesar made her do everything that she did(that's what she tells when she calls Micky and asks him to help her).
