Jack and Mike: Middle-Aged Ragers

Whatever else "Blood and Wine"'s got going for it, the best thing is the pairing of Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine.

Each of those guys are age-tested, charismatic actors. And NOBODY does better full-tilt screaming rages than those two. (Though Gene Hackman comes close.)

Watch them, warily pared as a couple of tired, middle-aged crooks who are still quite dangerous human beings.

It's worth the price of admission. Or a rental.

Yeah history will definitely show these guys as two of the greatest movie stars and two of the greatest actors of all time! And BLOOD & WINE gives them the opportunity to play some pretty nasty dudes...in other words, perfect casting!

By the way, only three actors have been nominated for acting Oscars in five consecutive decades: Laurence Olivier and these two guys!

i can't believe they didn't just hype the movie up as the first movie they did together.

Love the scene in the cafeteria where Caine "clears a space at the table" for Nicholson. Gee, I wonder what they were referencing with that bit?

reply

You got it backwards; it was Nicholson who dumped the cafeteria tray because Caine said there's nowhere to sit. Sheesh. You'd think someone who loves that scene would remember it right.

Dyslexia strikes again! My bad.

The irony is, what Nicholson does is the exact reason I was using the scene to reference an earlier movie of his. By the way, do you know which movie I'm talking about?

reply

Don't try to bait me with trivia; I don't care how smart you think you are. Besides, Rafelson says in the commentary they've had Nicholson clear a table one way or another in all their movies together. So it's an ongoing reference.

You're the one asking stupid questions. Don't tell me how my life should be lived.

Or don't. Wouldn't want you to feel like you need to stick around.

Wow, that discussion turned ugly fast!

Anyway, I take it the table-clearing scene is a reference to "The Postman Always Rings Twice," right?

I agree. I borrowed this randomly along with a few other titles from my father's collection for a rainy day and it sat on the shelf for a while. I didn't notice they were both in it and then when I saw them together I realised how special that was. The way they argue and do stuff together is quite amusing.

reply

Some good rage in this one. I agree! And that table tidbit is cool
