Don't you remember the little cookie wrappers they lit on fire to see them fly? They had Amaretti di Saronno cookies for dessert; I also noticed plates of nuts and fruit on the table. Seems anticlimactic after all those elaborate dishes, but it's very Italian (circa 1950s), I'd bet.
