How does this compare with Whale Rider?

Both movies are variations on the 'girls can do anything despite what grandad says' story. This one is hardly known (at least in the English speaking world) but it is far superior to Whale Rider in almost every respect. Nobody I know in New Zealand has seen this one, and are astonished that I would have the temerity to suggest that something Chinese did this story far better. Since none of them had seen this gem, I could never engage in sensible debate.

Anyone here seen both and care to comment?

I agree. King of Masks is far superior to Whale Rider. The actress playing Doggie was just outstanding as an actress and acrobat. King of Masks has a message that stays with you. That little girl did not give up no matter what life through her way.

Well, there's someone with good taste. :-)

One thing that stays with me was that expression on her face as she clings onto the pole to prevent her "Grandpa" from pushing the boat away. It is so terribly genuine (and incredibly sad). I don't see her name in any other movie, and I seem to remember reading somewhere that she was indeed a street-performer and -dweller. If that's true, chances are she received precious little for her efforts. I really hope that's not so.

We can't do much comparison of the two movies before observing that the grandfather character was far more credible than the one in Whale Rider.

I try to avoid comparing marvelous films because the overall theme may be similar... there was some fabulous acting in both films... but I do agree that Doggie seemed to pull more real pathos out of her performance than the Whale Rider lass...

a little difference made in the life of one can be the big difference made in the world
