Lawyer blames Streep at the end - huh?

Why would he look at Streep at the end and say "still think it was worth it?" like it was HER fault? She said stuff, ya. But that stuff wasnt what decided his fate. HE made the confession. HIM! So would he look at her like it was her fault? It had nothign to do with what she did. God this movie sucked!

I think this movie might have cult status with trial lawyers. They were the poster family for difficult clients.

I think you're wrong about Meryl Streep's confession having nothing to do with her son's decision to confess. The son was going along with his father's proposed story, even though he was clearly conflicted about it. It was only after his mother confessed everything that he felt free to go ahead and confess (and expiate his guilt, which was ripping him up, and which is partly what his mother was responding to in her decision to confess).

At the end of the trial, their lawyer was referring back to their conversation when he was contrasting "honesty" versus doing whatever it took to win. Streep's character was incredibly naive throughout the movie, from the beginning when she wanted to just hand the car keys over to the sheriff, to her belief that everyone would understand it was just an accident if the facts were known. As their lawyer tells them, the truth is rarely that simple.

The big plot hole in the movie to me was that no one seemed to care that the girl died at the hospital, which means that after hitting her the son never checked for a pulse, plus took the time to (somewhat miraculously) dig the car out of the snow.
