The Son Deserved a Longer Sentence

Early in the movie we see that the girlfriend is still alive when she's brought into the hospital.

That means after accidentally pushing the girl onto the jack during the fight the son left his girlfriend to die a prolonged death in the snow. He didn't even try to help her or he would have seen she was alive. Instead the son dug the car out of the snow while his girlfriend lies there right next to the car slowly dying.

Then the son drives the car home. Then he runs away. His girlfriend is still alive. But he never calls 911. At no time does the son tell anyone (including his mother who's a doctor) so the girlfriend can get help.

The girlfriend dies hours later in the hospital. If the son had gotten help right away it's possible the girlfriend could have lived.

If the girlfriend had died instantly I could have gone along with the 5 year sentence for involuntary manslaughter. But for the son's depraved actions afterward --- leaving his girlfriend to die --- while not trying to get help for her, I'd call that Murder 2 and have given him a much longer sentence.

You heard what Martha's mother said in the bathroom? (although your post is almost 1 year ago you might not remember now, )

Martha's mother said to Jacob's mom "You and all your money you think you can buy anything! You're trying to get him off! He's walking around free!"

Hahahahaha!! That was epic!

In that day kids didn't have the same sense of malice and intent that they do today so from my stand point the judgement was just considering Jacob's circumstances leading up to his day in court.

I really loved this movie! 10/10 

I disagree. Jacob's actions were not a result of malice, it was an argument between himself and his girlfriend that got out of hand.
