What does the mom say at the end?

When they're dancing next to each other at the end the mom turns to the boys and says, "Hey Ste..." and then something I can't understand that makes Jamie laugh. Anybody know?

reply

She said something like "what would your father say if he saw you now" words to that affect and both boys laugh. And it took me 3 viewing and then watching the credits to realize his name was Ste and not Steve.

Thanks. And I think Ste is a great name.

reply

Lol his name is Steve. But they call him Ste for short =P

English ppl are great =)

I believe his name is just "Ste." I see no mention of "Steve" on IMDB or Wikipedia. And I hope it's just "Ste" because "Ste" is unique and original.

IMDB:
"A tender love story set during a hot summer on a South-East London housing estate. Jamie, a relatively unpopular lad who bunks off school to avoid football, lives next door to Ste, a more popular athletic lad but who is frequently beaten up by his father and older brother. Such an episode of violence brings Jamie and Ste together: Sandra (Jamie's mum) offers refugee to Ste, who has to 'top-and-tail' with Jamie. Hence, the story tells of their growing attraction for one another, from initial lingering glances to their irrefutable love, which so magnificently illustrated at the end of the film. In deals with the tribulations of coming to terms with their sexuality and of others finding out, in light of Sandra's unwavering loyalty and defence of Jamie and the fear of repercussion should Ste's family find out. The plot is set against sub-texts of Sandra's desire to manage her own pub, and thus escape the estate, and of her new relationship with her hippy boyfriend Tony; and of Leah, the brassy girl next door who has been expelled from school and spends her time listening to Mama Cass records and tripping on a variety of drugs."

WIK:
"Jamie (Glen Berry), a teen who is infatuated with his classmate, Ste (Scott Neal), has to deal with his single mother Sandra (Linda Henry), who is pre-occupied with ambitious plans to run her own pub and with an ever-changing string of lovers, the latest of whom is Tony (Ben Daniels), a neo-hippie. Sandra finds herself at odds with Leah (Tameka Empson), a sassy and rude neighbour girl who has been expelled from school, does several drugs, and constantly listens and sings along to her mother's Cass Elliot records. While Jamie's homosexuality remains concealed, his introvert nature and dislike of football are reason enough for his classmates to bully him at every opportunity.

Ste, who is living together with his drug-dealing brother and abusive, alcoholic father in the flat next door, is one night beaten by his brother so badly that Sandra takes pity and lets him sleep over. In the absence of a third bed, Ste has to make do with sleeping 'top-to-toe' with Jamie. On the second night they share a bed, after a massage and a minor conversation, the boys soon change sleeping arrangements and Jamie kisses Ste for the first time."

When she yells through the mail slot, doesn't Sandra say "Ronnie - your little Steven's going to spend the night with us . . . . "?

His name is Ste. That's it. I just spoke with Jon Harvey and he told me so.

NOW HEAR THIS!!!!!!!!!! A new law has been passed by PenultimateMoon!!!! From now on nobody can be named anything other than a standard full name. Which means there are no more Jay's, there are only Jason's. There are no more Chris's, only Christopher's. There are no more Tony's, only Anthony's. There are no more Trish's, only Patricia's. There are no more Beth's, only Elizabeth's. And most importantly, MOST IMPORTANTLY, there can NEVER just be a Ste, it HAS to be Steven, EVEN IF THE GUY WHO WROTE THE PLAY NAMED HIM "STE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Sorry Mr. Harvey, you'll have to change his name to Steven. Nobody can be named Ste on their birth certificate. It just isn't legal anymore.

and while we're on the subject of names, at the very beginning of the movie, the new coach/teacher asks one of the classmates what Jamie's name is. The student tells him a name and the coach calls it out to Jamie and the name isn't Jamie but some other name......and it's funny as hell.

"Hugh Janus" is funny, but it has been around for decades at least. It's one of those names that teenagers keep trying to get the PA announcers to page at airports and malls. There's a long list and discussion of them on Wikipedia under the topic "gag name."

When Mr. Bennett falls for it, Jamie realizes how clueless the guy is, smiles his "I'm outta here" smile, and heads for home.

In addition to Sandra calling him steven through the mail slot, Jaime also calls him steven after he buys the hat for Jaime "My mr steven, what a pretty hat! does this mean we're engaged?" (mock voice) so...

hahaha =P

I'm also familiar with a few British boys, they said he was steven themselves =)

It does say Ste in the credits, but it's only a character name. That's his name throughout the movie, however his full name is Steven.

Let's just agree to disagree, shall we. I'll call him Ste and you can all call him Steven. Fair? Good.

reply

Detrime - with your permission, I'll call him 'Ste.' I still think it said Ste(v/ph)en on his birth certificate, but he was Ste to Jamie and his mates - and to those who loved the movie.

To me he'll always be the guy who burned the bubbles and squeak.

reply

because he got distracted and forgot to watch it like a hawk.

Best line of the thread LeftBanker - "To those who loved the movie he was Ste."

Amen.

Yes, 'Ste' is just short for Steven. Just as 'Bex' is short for 'Becky'. They are very cute short names - Mine would be 'Chris' which isn't very exciting so I've decided it will be 'Topher' instead (similar to 'Topher' Grace the actor, but I believe that is indeed his FULL name).

Christopher

My pal Christopher goes by 'stophe' (with a 'long o' as in 'rode')

What are you talking about? Several of the characters actually call him Steven so of course Ste is short for Steven (or Stephen). People shorten longer names all the time.
