Does anyone know of any good gay films like this? I've seen some (mainly American for some reason) and I just don't like them. They just seem very stereotypical and mostly feature someone or a whole cast of really camp characters. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with being camp, but not all gays are like that.
I liked this film and Get Real and of course Brokeback Mountain and there is the odd other which I can't remember, but something with a nice story liked these can be really good. So if anyone knows of any please let me know.
It is difficult to match the quality and emotional impact of BBM and Beautiful Thing, but here's a list of some that come close in my estimation:
1. Summer Storm* 2. Juste une Question d'Amour* 3. Latter Days 4. C.R.A.Z.Y.* 5. You'll Get Over It *
The ones marked with asterisks are foreign films with subtitles, but the intensity comes through. All of these are "coming out" type films. There are a lot of other gay genres worth exploring. Take look at the Get Real message board on imdb - the first topic right now is favorite gay films. Open it and click through the messages for a lot of suggestions.
I actually have Summer Storm and C.R.A.Z.Y. on DVD, which I like (esp. the latter). I will go over to the Get Real message board right now, as soon as the bus arrives.
Thanking you, I will check out the others you have mentioned.
Latter Days, Dog Day Afternoon, Angels in America, Maurice.... outstanding films of quality you would probably like. But the irony and humor of Get Real, and the touching romance of Beautiful Thing are hard to find...
An endearing, sweet and totally different romantic comedy that shows that there IS gay life ourside the metropolitan areas of the big cities and that not all gay movies are about ripped hunks, twinks and party boys.
Big Eden is a tiny town tucked away in the timberland of northwestern Montana, where cowboys lounge on the porch of the general store to pass the time away, and keep their eyes on things.
Although it's been years since he was back, Henry Hart, a successful but lonely New York artist, returns to Big Eden, the town of his childhood, to care for the ailing grandfather who raised him. Once home, Henry finds he must come to terms with his relationship to Dean Stewart, his best friend from high school, and the object of his unrequited love. Henry's feelings for Dean, which caused him to flee Big Eden nearly twenty years ago, seem to have only grown stronger over the intervening years.
At the same time, Henry's reappearance sparks a transformation in Pike Dexter, the shy, unassuming, Native American owner of the town's general store. Pike is as surprised as anyone, and completely unprepared, when he finds himself falling in love with Henry.
As this unspoken triangle unfolds under the scrutiny of Big Eden's community, nearly everyone in town develops a stake in its outcome.
When tragedy strikes and Henry chooses to leave once again, and Pike is unable to articulate feelings which might alter Henry's course, it is ultimately the people of Big Eden that must join together in an effort to help two of their own find true happiness.
BIG EDEN is a uniquely American fable about home and family. It hits upon the universal longing and hope we each have for finding a place where we are loved, and the unconditional desire to see those that we love
If you get the LOGO channel on your local cable, that's an excellent source of gay films both domestic and foreign. You can also find an excellent selection of gay films at TLAVIDEO.com.
Hey RB - I sent some suggestions back in November, and I hope you'll check them out. In the meanwhile, there are some excellent short films on the Logo website. Below is a link to the list of all their top-ranked films. This is all free, safe and easy to use. Be sure to hit the full-screen icon and turn up the volume when you watch them. My favorites are #5 - Mostly Willing - and #12 - One Fine Day. But there are lots of other interesting films here, too.
"The Sum Of Us" ... highly recommended! And "Maurice" is one of my all-time fave films.
Most others are mentioned above, though I have to say that "Latter Days" was a good idea poorly executed. The dialogue was awful, making the situation hard to believe. And "Trick" was just embarrassing and boring IMO.
