'Because she never came down with the last shower' What's that mean????

Hi..!
I'm from Indonesia.
English is not my native language.
I keep watching Beautiful Thing over and over again, but still i can't understand what did Sandra mean when she said:
"Because she never came down with the last shower"

a little reminder, here's the dialogue:

Jamie : Ste, she knows. My mum knows

Ste: oh why d'you have to go and grass?

Jamie: I never!

Ste: well, how comes she knows?!

Sandra: "Because she never came down with the last shower"

Could anyone please explain that to me?

Thank you so much in advance!

sincerely,
mr.pkrfc :)

From Indonesia? I used to work for a while in East Malaysia over 14 years ago, and had a member of staff there from western Sulawesi.

This saying is very English - it means Sandra was not gullible or naive.
Another way of saying that would be - "I wasn't born yesterday".

Is that a help?

Thank you so much!
Now I understand.

I live in West Java.

Come to Indonesia! It's a beautiful country. Try to visit Bali :D

reply

Glad I helped. :)

The shower Sandra spoke about in the phrase refers to a shower of rain!

I have been twice to Indonesia but only for day trips from Singapore, which I visited frequently for long weekends. (Batam and another island I have forgotten the name of, but yes, I know you have some beautiful islands. I was urged to spend a holiday in Bali by Australian friends back in the 90's but never made the trip).

Hi, I know this is rather old but I thought I'd give some input! Because it rains a lot in England, "the last shower" (meaning the last time it rained) isn't ever too far away . So when she says "because she never came down with the last shower" it means like she didn't just arrive on the planet when it last rained in England, i.e. she wasn't born yesterday/she's not naive and stupid to the ways of the world. :)

reply

No, it's okay! good information never gets old ^ ^
I didn't know it rains a lot in England.
Now i'm completely understood what Sandra said.
Thank you so much!!

I didn't understand that phrase either, I thought she was being literal, and she was referring to Ste, but now I get it.
