Question about Peppermint Lotion Backrub Scene

I just got the DVD and have since watched this great movie a few times. There's something I missed upon first viewing, that I think I just got.

So, Jamie is giving Ste a backrub, and asks him if he's ever kissed anyone and 'stuck your tongue in'. Shortly thereafter, he asks Ste to turn over so he can do his front. Ste is very reluctant and kind of panicky (he's sore, he's afraid he'll make noise and Sandra will come in, etc.) He then pleads with Jamie to turn off the light, and then sort of sneaks under the blanket when Jamie refuses. Upon my third viewing, it looks to me like Ste is a little, how you say, turned on, and is afraid for Jamie to see. Or am I totally reading into this?!

That Jamie is quite the smoothie! Do you think he deliberately set out to seduce Ste, or things just happened and he went for it? I'm guessing the latter, since both boys are very inexperienced. It's funny how un-apologetic Jamie was about things. Of course, Ste eventually comes up to Jamie's side of the bed. How could he refuse the adorable Jamie?

Haha thats what i think too :D i remember watching this for the first time and thinking "OMG he totally has a boner!" who could blame him? Jamies adorable albeit Ste is still my favorite haha

Yes, like both of the other posters I believe that's the real reason he didn't want to turn over.

And I agree that Jamie didn't deliberately set out to seduce Ste. He just took the opportunity that presented to reveal his feelings. I think, despite Ste's reluctance to openly acknowledge it, that they both had a fair understanding of where their feelings lay once that encounter took place. The rest of the movie was just ironing out the wrinkles and finding a way to live their affection openly. I'm glad they held onto each other and decided to push through it together.

It's funny because as a guy myself I knew exactly why he didn't want to turn around on the first viewing. When you are at that age something like somebody rubbing your back (especially when you've never slept or kissed anyone before) can be a very huge turn on.

Am with you there!

I remember at 16/17, at high school, being asked to straddle the back of another well-built class-mate (only in short shorts!) in our gymnasium by our Games Master, to give him extra weight to do press-ups, in front of my other 15 or so team-mates.
Back then I didn't openly defy a teacher but I did, as I knew I'd have had a similar sensation to Ste's! The teacher eventually backed down, let me off and didn't pursue his instruction with any of the other boys. I expected to be ribbed by the others in the locker room later but wasn't, in fact, they were all kind and understanding with me.

Looking back to that event, yes I was lucky, and when told to straddle this very handsome, sporty guy in class, even then felt stirrings where I shouldn't have done, let's say. I risked strict punishment for defiance of my teacher, as these times were far stricter than now, but possibly he guessed why I had refused (with a red face) and let the matter go. My next fear was my classmates' reaction in the locker room. They were quietly supportive and not one ribbed me, surprisingly. This even from the sportier types who openly bullied any boy in high school suspected, rightly or wrongly, of any effeminacy. Homophobia in those years was rife everywhere, and no protection for gay men at all. Yes again, I was in luck, you're right. Even now,my respect goes out to my then mates, as I was not friendly with all of them.

In (the 20th anniversary revival of) the play it's a lot more clear what's going on. Because Ste is anxiously hiding his arousal behind a pillow, when he transitions from lying on his belly to lying under the bed sheets.

Here's an image from the play where it happens.
