Pastrami and fettuccine on rye?

Cheese salad? What are these things?

reply

Would you like to expand a tad on that question? Was this mentioned by Sandra to Tony when she returned with Ste in tow after her night working at the pub?

Cheese salad, I could only guess that might have been cheese (obviously)with perhaps gem lettuce, tomato, and a couple of red onion rings or cornichon, sliced, as a sandwich? Smear it all with mayo? :)

reply

I don't remember this being mentioned in the film! :)

reply

Yes, Sandra mentioned the sandwiches to Jamie before she left for work. Cheese & salad, and the one with the beetroot was for Tony (the boyfriend). Doesn't sound appealing to us American audiences, but I'm guessing a cheese & salad sandwich was just a cheese sandwich with lettuce, tomato, etc., as mentioned above.

reply

I've wondered about this myself. I wondered if cheese-n-salad might be something like pimento cheese spread that we have here.

As for the pastrami and fettuccine is...whether it's a real sandwich or Tony was just being weird.

Also, I don't see how anyone missed these references.

If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, nobody else wanted them either.

reply

T. was being sarcastic!

reply

No no NO!
Never use cheese spread!
Slice cheese, cheddar, red leicester, whatever you like :)
And the salad would be lettuce, red onion and tomato.

reply

I agree.
However, your cheeses whilst good, are a bit everyday. I'd opt for a creamier double-Gloucester with chives, maybe, or a fresh Jarlsberg?
But yes, never cheese spread.

I believe what Tony said was "pastrami and FETA CHEESE on rye?" I think he might have been being a bit facetious.

I don't care, though, I loved Tony. I was pissed off that Sandra dumped him. Love the silent scene in Leah's bedroom where he's sitting beside her (in Sandra's robe!) as she lay in bed recovering, and Rose comes in and gives him a cup of coffee or tea. He was a good guy in my book.

reply

Oh that makes way more sense. Still, not my ideal sandwich, but makes more sense. I hate that the DVD doesn't have subtitles.

Cheese salad is just a green salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomato, etc) with cheese added.

Tony was just trying to be funny when he suggested pastrami with fettucine on rye. I imagine it doesn't exist (no one has pasta on sandwiches, even in England), but he thought it sounded fancy.

I realize this is also rather late, but I never thought that Tony was being facetious as much as it was another clue that Tony didn't really "fit in" (thus foreshadowing the breakup). I have always viewed it that Tony was truly clueless of his differences (ref. the question about "University Challenge", being upset at the use of the word "bird" while *beep* was apparently OK, Sandra rounding on him when he tells her he knows it's hard on her to accept Jamie is gay). Even his accent is not Thamesmeade but RP.

reply

Accents don't matter as much as they used to, unless it is almost unintelligible! :)

Tony would have known Sandra had no rye bread or fettuccine in her kitchen, hence his wittiness ; Sandra wasn't at that point in the mood, alas for T.!

How do you mean?

reply

That night, Sandra was in no mood for jokes. Consider the entire domestic situation. Ste had been abused by his family, and Sandra, brought him into her flat to stay and sleep overnight. Plaudits to her.
In her shoes, or Ste's or Jamie's, much to laugh about? C'mon!
