movies where the main character returns to his hometown.....

Hi, I'm looking for some good nostalgic movies in which a guy returns to his hometown after a long time and meets his old friends, falls in love with a gal and all that, storyline like this.

I loved this one and my other recommendations, if you love these kinda movies:

Lonesome Jim
Elizabeth town
Garden State

please recommend more.. thanks :)

Some of my favorites there(Mickey Rourke and Kevin Bacon), would definitely check it out this weekend. Thanks a bunch. :)

So i watched "Diner" last weekend and man!! I can't thank you enough for recommending this. What a great movie. Amazing performances by the characters, reminded me of my own good old days. And especially, when they talk about dating and then marrying your sweetheart, that was so so true.

A really really memorable movie. Loved the character of Boog. Thanks a zillion. :)

Glad that you enjoyed it so much and happy to be of service.

I've always like the fact that it was set in Baltimore and not the usual NY or Chicago.

Yeah, the setting was pretty good and loved the looks of those empty streets when they used to leave from the diner at early morning.

Try "No Looking Back" with Edward Burns. This movie fits the bill you are looking for.I found the character, Charlie, played by Ed Burns somewhat irritating in the movie, but Jon Bon Jovi and Lauren Holly are excellent in portraying their respective characters.
The opening scenes, of a cold, rainy, seacoast town really sets the tone for the whole movie.

Hey, thanks a lot. I am a big fan of Edward Burns so definitely not gonna miss this one. Will check it out and tell you. :)

May not be exactly what you're looking for (i.e. the main character is female), but "Young Adult" had that basic plotline - with a few twists. ;-)

Thanks Lolo, I've seen that one, it's pretty good. We don't see many movies like these with girl as the lead. I also saw "Stuck Between Stations" recently which has a similar storyline and is JUST AMAZING !!! Great midnight watch.

Still trying to get hold of "No Looking Back" recommended by lca223, pretty hard to find.

Southie with Donnie Wahlberg (who I think has tenfold more acting depth than Mark). It's a bit different in that it's got a big gangster subplot but it's basically the same idea of a guy returning home after being away a long time and meeting up again with a never realized love interest.

@Naughty-God: It's my favorite genre, so I'll check it out. I also saw Dead Man's Shoes recently, has a similar plot, except there is no girl in the picture and the movie is MIND-BLOWING !!! Paddy Considine's performance is amazing.

Indian Summer is right up your alley. Light but poignant story of a group of adult friends who return to the summer camp they all attended in their youths. They want to spend one final time together before it's shut down. They revive old memories, relive prior experiences; flames are reunited and hijinks are pulled.

It was made around the same time as Beautiful Girls and it boasts a pretty respectable ensemble: Alan Arkin, Diane Lane, Bill Paxton, Kevin Pollack, Vincent Spano, Elizabeth Perkins, Sam Raimi (!), Matt Craven, and others.

It's not as good as Beautiful Girls (few films of this kind are), but I'll think you'll cherish it.

A lot of people in this thread are taking your "return to hometown" motif too literally; they're missing the essence of what you're requesting. These are essentials that you need to track down:

Return of the Secaucus Seven

That Championship Season

The Big Chill

St. Elmo's Fire

It

P.S. I'm glad you discovered and fell in love with Diner. It's one of my all-time favorites, and the only movie of its type on par with Beautiful Girls.

I came here to post 'Indian Summer' but it looks like SeanJoyce beat me by two days :)

Grosse Point Blank kinda fits the bill. Actually, it hits the nail on the head with a charachter returning to his hometown and finding love, with a hitman angle.
