I don't think anyone would say it isn't creepy, but its not like he did anything wrong. He found himself in an awkward situation and made the right decision.

reply

I never thought it was creepy, even for a second. The way the film and actors portray the storyline was perfect--believable but not creepy. Their relationship was quite wholesome and old fashioned, aside from the age difference. The way they acknowledge the possibility and quickly realize it will never happen is my favorite part of the movie.

It's funny to me how excited you are about this revelation.

As lovely as Marty is, I think Willie's infatuation stems from the fact that she is so young and innocent and represents his own "lost youth". This is why he is drawn to Andera as well. She is beautiful and mysterious and not tied down. Willie is simply not ready to settle down and get married, not to Tracy or anyone. Mo points out to him that he is afraid of growing up and he is drawn to Marty because of that. The fact that Willie compares himself to someone like Humbert Humbert may represent this as well.

Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.

Right, there's nothing *wrong* with it, but had Willie not been diverted by Andera things could have gotten a lot more complicated. It's dicey ground to be sure, and this sort of trans-generational mingling is not to be encouraged.

The OP seems pretty benign but if a certain type of person were to watch this film...

I disagree with people saying that "he didn't act upon it so he did nothing wrong." If your spouse developed feeling for someone else but didn't act upon it does that make it okay? I should hope not. It's wrong

@aliholly, I have no intent to minimize your own feelings but a straight female can't easily identify with what goes through the mind of a straight male.

There is a great difference, a large gulf, between being attracted to an underage girl and actually pursuing that attraction. The filmmakers walked the fine line well, I believe, to show that while Willy had a genuine attraction to Marty he also knew clearly that doing something about it would be wrong. We all know those sorts of attractions happen, to most of us at one time or another, and to show that a well-adjusted man will handle it correctly can be taken as a positive rather than a negative.

And remember the only "romantic" discussion involved him waiting until she was 18 and it was suggested by her, not by him. Overall he (fictionally) handles the whole thing about as well as a man can.

Also, there is such a thing as attraction that's not primarily sexual, though some might mistake it for that. Willie is astute enough not to make that mistake & just enjoys the platonic aspect of their relationship, knowing that it's both impossible & fleeting. Perhaps he's indulging himself a little, too, but he never lets that get out of hand. I think the film is acknowledging this sort of attraction & observing it, without encouraging or promoting it. Willie knows early on that it's a fantasy & that Marty represents something that he's lost in himself, and he also knows that there's no going back for it. Which is as it should be.

I just watched the film again and I honestly don't see their relationship as being creepy. When Willie and Marty say goodbye, the kiss on the cheek, is an expression of Willie's feelings for their friendship. I believe the kiss is also symbolic of the innocence in their relationship.
