Anney is the most repugnant character ever

One minute after she finds her husband raping her bloodied 12 year old daughter, she lovingly runs her hand through his hair??? WTF?!?!?!?!

I just watched this and was appalled by this character! I thought when she found him doing that and smacked him over the head she finally saw him for what the bastard was, but then like you said, she goes back to him and leaves her daughter with her brother for the bastard! Unbelievable! Any mother like that doesn't deserve kids. All along I kept thinking "what is happening to the other kid!" After all we never hear about her or what became of her.

It really is freaking unbelievable how a mother could go back to a man after finding him raping her daughter. It's disgusting.

Instead of running her hand lovingly through the sick bastards hair she should have grabbed his head and continued to smack it against the damn car door!

Sheeeesh. Her letting him whip her like that in the bathroom...in retrospect I think that scene haunts me more then ther ape. GAWD. I want that mom to get raped. A lot.

I HATED her with every fiber of my being. Any woman who choses a man(or even worse, an abusive man) over her child is a spineless sorry excuse for a human being.

Sadly, it happens in real life. Some women are even aware of their men sexually abusing their kids for years and they prefer to keep everything in silent. Then once in a while it appears in the news.

She was a very weak person. That does not by any means excuse what she did, she is just a weak and somewhat selfish woman who cannot live without a man. Disgusting, but there are women like that. I can handle a lot from a man, but if one ever hurt my child like that I would kill him. I might spend the rest of my life in prison, but he would never touch my kid again. Anything less would earn him an unforgettable beating, possibly disabling. And I damn sure would not stick around to give him a chance to do it again.

Remember, the film is set in the 1950s. Women had fewer rights, opportunities and freedom than today. In those days, especially in that type of society, women often felt or were told that they needed a husband to survive. I agree that in some ways Annie was weak and dependent. That doesn't make her actions and choices any less despicable, but the era she lived in severely limited her path and her choices. Of course, this probably happened more than we know, past and present. Some women choose their partner/husband over their children. Terrible, but true. Their lack of self-esteem and inner strength makes them think that having a man is more important than the well-being of her children. And the children ultimately suffer for it.

You make a good point. Wish more people would realize this.

I understand your point and appreciate where you are coming from but it was still no excuse to take him back. He was a monster and despite the oppression women face back then anytime a man rapes a child, he is considered the lowest form of humanity and could still go the jail. Annie saw the man rape her own daughter, she could've pressed charges, even though the 50's was very male dominated they still value the welfare of a child. Annie had family and could've lived with her sisters with her children, find a job and could've had some stability.

For me, watching this movie was like reliving my own childhood, minus the sexual abuse.

My mother was exactly the same as Anney. She ALWAYS had to have a man, it was the most important thing to her. And while she claimed to love me until she was blue in the face, her actions always spoke otherwise.

My mother was in the same room when her boyfriend would call me fat, stupid, and ugly. He would make multiple comments all the while my mother stood there and said nothing. If I ever tried to talk to her about it, her response would be "Well, if you would just try and be a little bit nicer..."

Eventually, she pawned me off onto my grandmother and left me behind so she could be with him. He didn't want any kids.

Even in 2016, there are many women just like Anney who will put a man before their children no matter what. My mother's mindset was: as a 36 year old divorced mother of two, who else is gonna want me.

Poor self esteem can truly destroy families.
