where are the loyal BDt fans and Julian Schnabel fans at??

i had to go ut and buy this dvd in order to get any info on it. sigh. no spoilers or nothing about the moiveon the board. i amvery disappointed. waht kind of fans are ya anyway. ok it is an old movie but a great one.

BDt did not have a big role but he won an independent spirit award for it.

and this was julian's first movie and it was great, i liked it better than before night falls (but that is cuz the author reinaldo irked me, he seemed a lil weak, gay or not, he needed to man up)

i really got in otuch withthe characters inthe movie and ahh i loved it and i cannot believe that was david bowie playinf andy warhol, he was great, the dvd needs extras, maybe i'll write julian and plead with him to ask the actors to reminsce abou teh film at like a dinner or something. a reuion of sorts. yeah and add it to the dvd yeah. that would be great.

and i am rambling cuz i doubt anyone will read this since apparently this movie is too old for folks to comment on but if you ar a fan of julian schnabel or david bowie or BDt or this jeffery wright due you should comment aout t his movie. it really lived up to the hype. and i am glad i own it.

seen this film on bb2 2 in scotland the other night all i have to say is "what a *beep* film"! the score was great the acting was superb and it was based on a true story....class!.

reply

hmm i must watch it again and be on the lookout for the score. i was so involved with the man and seeinghis struggle to make and survive once he did that i did not really notice the music. but since i own the dvd(no extras really to speak of) i will be memorizing every aspect of this film. oh yeah.

this movie is really good, it gives us a sutle view of Jean Michel Basquiat's life. if you knew anything about Jean Michel Basquiat you wouldn't look so idiotic. This is a movie based on someone's life yes he hung out with hip people in that 80's pop culture downtown manahattan world but that was only for about 5-6 years. before that he was homeless as a child he was hit by a car and had his spleen removed, he was also stabbed, his mother was in a insane asylum, when he was a child he was beaten and tied up like an animal. When Basquiat became big he was the only famous black artist of that modern art time. During the 1980's there was not one black artist in the MOMA, so yes he has a contemporary struggle. he had a severe heroin addiction that many people in manhattan had the time. some people are never comfortable with fame, and can't handle money. Instead of buying his love suzanne gifts he bought he pasteries cause he belived that is what he rich did.(her name was changed to gina in the movie for some reason i don't know) so before you coment and say someone hasn't struggled understand that you do not know what struggle is. thank you
i <3 Jean Michel

reply

thank you for you defense of Basquiat. i don't know why he said that. and what does the passionhave to do with this. if he knew anything about either men in the films, then he would know that JEsus was struggling so Jean-Micheal would not have to... but ignorant folks abound.

this movie depressed me for a whole week afterward. i felt like i never wanted to paint again.

reply

never wanted to paint again??? why?
i mean he was a drug addict so eventually he was gonna die, but i thought artist thrived on extreme emotions like depression or passion , ya know i thought you guys were inspired or something like that. well all my lil poet friends write when they get depressed so i guess i thought painters did as well. i thought it was like therapy or something.

I didnt read all of these post cause....well i just don't have the energy right now. But yes, Benicio did a great job in this movie. I loved the entire film and to this day it still has one of my favorite closing lines. "Benny, fucck Hawaii, lets go to Ireland. We can stop in every pub and have a drink"

reply

sorry to be pedantic but the lines every BAR and hav a drink.
heheh, sorry, im just being an ass cos i litterally JUST finished watching it and its the last line of the film. tho im actually gonan turn out to bewrong and look a fool.

anyway. this is a beautiful film. i first saw it on bbc2 YEARS ago, must have been its permiere, before i was into art much. so i viewed it with out knowing anything about t
the charecters what so ever (how much is true is debateable i know). but as soon as i found it on DVD i bought it and have pretty much watched it at least once every 2 months ever since .i love it so much. beautifully written/dirceted/acted and scored. its perfect in every way. when i first saw it i was so interested to know more that i read up and researched and discovered and was inspired enough to be an artist. so i guess i should blame this film for my life going wrong eh! heheh.
anyway, if you have seen this film, you have had your life improved for it, if you havnt seen it, do so!

i am better than you. deal with it.

ah finally someone else who adores this film.

julian truly needs to make another one. although i liked basquait a lot better than that cuban writer he was such a wimp. i know gay men who are not so wimpy, he just seemed like such a victim, maybe that was julian's fault or maybe it was javier's or maybe he really was a wimpy kinda guy, he seemed so soft.

basquait was not. he had a FU thing going on very cool guy, i felt sorry for him but did not think he was a wimp or soft, dumb for doing drugs and not listening to his firends when he got famous but certainly not soft.

the movie is jut beuatigul, it is art. i normally don't hinkof movies as art but both of julian schanbel's films are art. and one i did not even like the protagaonist. art, simply beautiful

and the music. ah! sweet. great. i might buy the soundtrack it iso good. it stayed with me. love it, and normally i hate when directors just do music and no dialouge or anything else (i.e. malick) but i liked it in this movie and he did it a lot.

I thought this movie was moving. In a world where most of try to fit in to the middle class in hopes of being socially accepted, here's one who, for the most part is himself. Most of us wish we could be as free-spirited as Mr. Basquait, but the limitations we place on ourselves prevent us from doing just that. Yes, drug addiction is terrible. Maybe he needed the fix to escape his disdain of the ugliness of the world. If only he had looked into his art, he would have found his escape.
