Jeffrey Wright impressed the hell out of me

He fit this role so well. I never once felt like I was watching a film. He made it real and engaging. I've never really seen any of his other films, but this caught my eye.

David Bowie stole almost every scene he was in, though. ;p

Naw, this is Jeffrey's film. David did good, but he didn't not steal it.

Jeffrey made you feel Jean-Michel.

Indeed.

Wright is so overlooked and underrated.

Jeffrey Wright was absolutely amazing in this role. I couldn't take my eyes off him. . . in many instances so subtle, yet compelling. He must have studied Basquiats films and had all of the right direction. Good for him!

I totally agree. In fact, between his performance as Basquiat, the slave Daniel Holt in Ang Lee's Ride with the Devil, the ambitious drug lord Peoples Hernandez in John Singleton's remake of Shaft, and, especially, the gay nurse Belize in Angels in America -- all accomplished in a 6-year span -- it seemed undeniable that Jeffrey Wright was headed for super stardom. He could play absolutely any character with depth, emotional honesty and utter believability.

He is clearly still held in the highest regard for his talent, but Wright never made that leap to above-the-title credit. And that's a shame.
