Why was'nt Madonna in the acknowledged in the flim?

When Madonna was starting her music career she was living in New York. She met Basquiat and were lovers for about three months. Isnt that worth mentioning in the flim?

reply

I think Courtney Love is portraying her character.

reply

courtney love is not portraying madonna.

it's briefly mentioned during the interview Basquiat has with Walken.

reply

Yeh Madonna n Basquiat were apparently involved in a relationship for a while but i dont know why it wasn't really greatly acknowledged in the film.

She was not the character played by Courtney Love. According to the extra's on the New york beat movie which features Basquiat entitled 'Downtown 81' (which i highly recomend as a raw and rare insight into Basquiat's character) Courtney Love was portraying a lady called Tina Lhotsky who is described as the person who was "queen" of the Mudd club during Basquiat's time.

reply

Yes (like the poster a few posts above mentioned,) Christopher Walken's character mentioned it in the interview.

It was not widely acknowledged in the film too much, Courtney Love DID NOT portray Madonna. Like they said, Madonna was mentioned briefely with Basquiat's interview with Christopher Walken.

I think the film does not wholly represent Basquiat's life, the film seems too shallow. They missed alot, like failure to explain the lesions on his face which could have been caused by either Hepatitis or the HIV virus.

reply

The lesions on his face were simply due to the fact that using heroin causes itching, which, in turn, caused him to obsessively scratch his face. Basquiat did not have Hepatitis or HIV. Please don't speculate without doing your research.

reply

He actually had a some sort of dermatology issue that caused them - There is a good biography on Basquiat called "A Quick Killing in Art" that explains that. I loved the film but if you read the biography you will see that a lot of things about his life were not included in this film. Like with real life things are always more complicated and involved, but dont make for a flowing story. Like I said, regardless, this is one of my favorite films.

reply

It is mentioned in the interview with Walken's character... but she never actually appears or is shown, its mentioned as a "you even dated Madonna. For two whole months!" kind of way.

I'm allergic to Homophobes, they make me break out in a rant.

reply

But the "you even dated Madonna" sounds stupid if this was to be at the beginning of her career.

reply

She was worth a passing remark at that point in her career, which is what she gets in the film. No more, no less.

reply

Madonna IS mentioned in the film. In the interview conducted by Christopher Walken, he mentions the three months they were lovers, but then, EVERYBODY screwed Madonna.

reply

Is there ANYONE who's not been with that woman? Ewww.

El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?

reply

Any opportunity to deny Madonna more press is a worthwhile one in my opinion. She wasn't a pivotal character in his life so why spend more time on her than the throwaway line already in the film?

reply

No! Why is that important? Why isn't his visit to the Ivory Coast included? it's a film focussing on his transtion from struggling to respected artist which also attempts to assume the role of the artist by communicating his attitude and work. It's not an historical document.. if you already know about his fling with madonna then what purpose does it serve in the film and why, as I asked previously, is that important? don't we see and hear enough about the pop cockroach as it is!?

reply

oh so courtney love does not portray madonna but madonna is mentioned in the interview?

.....

reply

Madonna is such a sleep around kinda girl she probably was seeing J.M.B. before he even got famous while he was sleeping in a box on the street. That woman's hormones run WILD!

Funny nobody says the same thing about Mick Jagger or Prince despite them doing the exact same thing.

More do nothings who simply can't stand the fact that Madonna worked her ass off for years starting at the absolute bottom, reinvents herself according to her own rules and always has, and has enough confidence not to allow the approval of others to dictate who she is, which is an epidemic afflicting the weak such as those on here running their mouths about her in a pathetic attempt to appear more refined or more discerning when in fact all that is is putting lipstick on the pig that is their own fear of failure and need for the approval of others.

Be original at least. This textbook sheep-like character assassination of those with more gumption than the average cubicle dweller whose only brush with relevance and fame is IMDB has grown prehistorically old. Thanks. Don't run with scissors.

I hate to say it but the reason Madonna was left out is because Schnabel is part of a boys club in the art world. Not only is Madonna's relationship not dealt with but Suzanne Mallouk is totally missing from the movie. Suzanne was probably the most important person outside of his family in his development as an artist. God forbid we represent an Arab women as part of the New York art scene

reply

I'm going to leave myself open for criticism, but it is my belief that the artworld resented Madonna (who also 'dated' Michael Jackson?!) so obviously trying to use it as a way of amassing attention. I wouldn't expect Schnabel to have taken it any more seriously than anyone else in the artworld at that time. It is telling that Schnabel had the interviewer mention it, as he would represent the most shallow element in the movie. (Isn't it interesting how the interviewer in 'Pollock' also comes out being a shallow jerk as well.)
