Amazing Werewolf!!!

and...that's about it :) It took me 3 times to finally finish this movie. I actually couldn't believe it wasn't even 90 minutes cause it felt like at least 2 hours. Such great make-up fx. Definitely the scariest werewolf I've seen on 2 legs. Unfortunately, I found most everything else to be kinda a bore. I couldn't believe how much screen time the dog was getting. We get it, dogs and wolves are similar. Then I saw at the end that it was based on the book 'Thor.' The screenplay seemed like it had too much dog but in the book I guess that all makes sense. Worth watching for the werewolf!

reply

Yep, the book is mostly focused on the dog. However, I wish the movie had followed the book a little more, we would have felt much more sympathy for Uncle Ted. There was better character development such as the discussion of Uncle Ted's rapid change in the types of books he read. Plus, in the book he had a cabin in the wooded area, then later on he moves in with them into the airstream. O and the werewolf in the book looked heck of a lot different than he did in the movie. In the book he's more human-looking, so I guess that's one point where the movie improved upon by making the werewolf look more fierce.

reply

Can understand why they changed it because some people think a werewolf as a wolf head on a man's body.

reply

i, generally, think of a werewolf as a slightly larger than man-sized bipedal wolf. but that's because i grew up on the 'Werewolf' tv series; where it looked a lot like a bear-wolf cross. and i'd distinguish it from a wolf-man; which is the lon chaney-esque hairy fanged man. and, further still, i see both as separate from 'skinwalkers.' the latter are just humans who shed that form to reveal a wolf form. but that's just me.

It was like a blend of the Howling and American Werewolf in London with the tall big ear lean two legged wolf and fierce yellow eyes and fangs. The werewolf unlike the ones in the Howling that were in complete darkness was in bright light and graphically exposed, fx guys weren't afraid to show off what they created.

I agree that this werewolf is cool looking. Also very frightening to boot. I could see the pure malice in its face.

Welcome to my Nightmare- Freddy Krueger

Interesting thing is that this werewolf can change at any moon not just the full moon and can be killed by any means even through AWIL werewolf was killed by normal bullets.

Does the book have Ted changing at any moon like in the film?

reply

It wasn't always clear what phase of the moon there was. But events of the book took place within span of a week, two at most. And he was changing every night, by the end it was a full moon, so by that I gather that yes he could transform under any phase of the moon.

reply

Probably due to moonlight or gravity.

Jack Nicholson changed at a half moon and a gibbous moon.

Ted said any moon can do the trick but the film only shows the full moon.

reply

You know I never really associated transformations with the phase of the moon. If it is something as you suggested, such as moon light, then any moon should trigger the change. However, my theory has always been biological. As in maybe there is a biological cycle involved with whatever agent that causes the transformations. And that it is the Sunlight that keeps the transformation in check, perhaps this fictional Lycan virus is sensitive to exposure to uv light or something along that train of thought.

The movie consistently shows full moon yes, I guess an aesthetic reason.

reply

It was suggested in the film lycanthropy is biological(like the vampires in Blade) with Ted having a blood test, as you may known the moon's gravity moves tides on Earth so it may have an affect on werewolves or as you said a drop in sunlight.

Some say moonlight has some effect on plants.

reply

The gravitational pull of the moon triggers the transformation same way as it causes sea tides on Earth to rise.

reply

Tidal forces are stronger at the full moon.

reply

They put the werewolf on the poster which what got me into watching this film because it reminded me of American Werewolf in London.

reply

Only movie werewolf that has a tail which you'll notice when handcuffed to a tree.

it's implied it can jump and leap as seen when crashing through a window.

reply

Actually the movie is only 79 mins.

But I agree that the werewolf FX are awesome. I hate the fact that werewolf transformations these days consist of : changing into an actual wolf, CGI dog looking creatures, or Teen Wolf style with just colored eyes, fangs, and pointy ears.

I miss old style werewolf FX like in the TV show Werwolf that aired on FOX, or in movies like Silver Bullet and Bad Moon.

reply

Mid transformation looked interesting where bits of his features were changing at different paces, one ear is bigger than the other, one canine tooth was bigger than the other and half his face was stretched.
