Where can i download these french films?

I find it hard for me to find a great torrent for the best french or other european films. Anyone help me please cuz i guess american films nowadays have become more cliche than ever.

reply

Just an idea- why don't you go and buy them instead. It will help the french film industry get the money to carry on making good films.

By the way, knowing how stupid you americans are, perhaps I should just confirm that France is a country in central Europe. There are, believe it or not, other countries outside the USA.

Is it true that 60% of Americans don't hold a passport?? That's so funny.

reply

No need to be so insulting and condescending, especially to a poster who was complimenting French films. L'appartement wasn't released in the US, so it's not possible to buy it. I've tried finding copies of the DVD on amazon.fr and amazon.uk, but there is no NTSC or Region 0 version of the film. Sometimes, downloading is the only option - and if more people see it and like it, a distributor is more likely to try to release the movie here.

I am french and i share your opinion.

Gee.

I'm not american, but really, wow!!, it impresses me and pisses me off how stupid people can be around imdb. A person expressing how much he or she likes french cinema and you come out with with something (acording to you, soo clever) like "By the way, knowing how stupid you americans are, perhaps I should just confirm that France is a country in central Europe. There are, believe it or not, other countries outside the USA.

WOW, I just hope people like you are becoming endangered species, otherwise this world is f_u_c_ked up.

I just feel sorry for you, thanks to people like you it is still more difficult to get along with other cultures.

krakunki,

You did not mention which country you are from but if you are from the USA then it is much easier to buy or rent foreign films if the movie has been released in the USA. If a paticular movie has not been released in the USA (like L'Appartement) then it does become more dificult to find. But if you live in the USA and you are interested in foreign movies, I can highly recommend these movies below. All of these movies have been released in the USA so you will be able to either buy or rent them.

The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) (France)
Layer Cake (2004) (UK)
Downfall (aka Der Untergang) (2004) (Germany)
The Sea Inside (aka Mar Adentro) (2004) (Spain)
Shaun of the Dead (2004) (UK)
The Edukators (2004) (Germany)
Memory Of A Killer (aka The Alzheimer Case) (2003) (Belgium)
Kontroll (2003) (Hungary)
I'm Not Scared (2003) (Italy)
The Spanish Apartment (2002) (France/Spain)
Late Night Shopping (2001) (UK)
The Devil's Backbone (2001) (Spain)
Amelie (2001) (France)
Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) (France)
Run Lola Run (1998) (Germany)
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) (UK)
Open Your Eyes (1997) (Spain)

Krakunki,
I have a multi-format (both PAL & NTSC), code free DVD player (the USA version of Amazon.com sells them) so I go to eBay to find French films that have not been released in the US.

Many of the French, Spanish and Italian films that were not released in the USA were released in Asia and there are many Asian sellers on eBay. You have to be cautious since there are some disreputable sellers out there. To weed out the bad ones, check the feedback forums and make sure there are specifics posted in the DVD listing (languages, subtitles, coding, format among others).

I bought "L'appartement" last week from a Shaghai seller who had the Region 3/NTSC Korean release and the copy is fine. Just remember to make sure that the DVD has English subtitles if you don't speak French and that the DVD is NTSC and Region 1 or region free if you don't have a multi-format, code-free player.

Krakunki,

Cliched? Although I enjoy American films also, I do have much worse adjectives for the state of the industry this day & age.

Download? I disagree with the tone of 1st reply but agree with his valid message. You'll encounter the same ethical challenges when downloading films as with downloading music...legally & I do concur with Nadnad & Neil. The Region 1 titles for French films are limited so you do have to invest a little more money for accessing them from abroad. I'm an American citzen & in today's wired age, there's really no country so far away that you cannot gain access to films from abroad & yes, you do need to invest a little.

It's fairly easy to purchase a region free player (very affordable these days at $45-100US)& my DVD of L'Appartement is via the UK's Artificial Eye, PAL Region 2 quite expensive actually (at 14.99# = $26.00US) since for my tastes, I do appreciate their transfers more than the Asian Region 3 product as a whole. I purchased this one blind because I'm a huge Monica Bellucci fan & haven't been disappointed. Other French films I've purchased from Europe that I highly recommend:

Patrice LeCont, La Fille sur le pont (aka Girl on the Bridge, 1999) *****/5 R2.
Michael Haneke, Code inconnu: Récit incomplet de divers voyages (aka Code Unkown 2000) ****/5
Patrice Chereau, La Reine Margot (aka Queen Margot 1994) R2 this one BTW is widely available R1 in the States. ****/5
Olivier Marchal, 36 Quai des Orfèvres (2004) R2. ***.5/5

I guess I've been lucky as you well know, there's hardly any press on these films over here. Good luck.

For the movies "Code Unknown" and "Queen Margot" you also have the option of buying them directly from amazon.com in R1 for the USA. Also at this point in time you can pre-order another French film by Michael Haneke called "Cache" on amazon.com since it will be released this summer. Michael Haneke is the director for both "Cache" and "Code Unknown".

L'Appartement is now available on DVD in the USA from Lions Gate. You can buy it or possibly rent it. There's no need to download an inferior copy.

All dvd players are region free, it's the software that isn't. Just search "unlock dvd region code" or some such on the interweb and you'll find what you need to reset your dvd player to region free.
