How Much Is The Coin Worth? One Answer Here

QUOTE:

Incidentally, the only "buffalo" nickel worth very much is the 1918 minting, with 8 stamped over the 7. In the 1960's it was listing at $160 in "fine" condition.

The above quote is from a reviewer named Fisher over in the IMDB reviews section. I guess the date of 1917 was wrongly stamped and then over-stamped with 1918.

Silly me, In watching the film, I was hoping to find out that the coin was worth a great deal of money. One time Don says something about how the guy would have paid nine times $50.

I don't think the true value of the nickel is ever totally mentioned in the movie but then the movie is not really about that aspect. It is NOT a caper movie, rather it is a character study on three desperate people.

Silly me.

Initially I believed it to be the 3 legged variety from 1937-D.
As this is the most famous and valuable from the entire Indian Head run.

How long before the 1917/1918 overstamp was discovered? If I were to guess, I think that is more of a modern discovery of an error.
While the 3 legged variety from 1937 has been known all along.

There are a few key dates, 1913-S Type 2, 1937-D 3 legged, 1915-S, 1917-D, 1917-S, 1921-S, 1926-S.
The 1918-D/17 over stamp, and the 1914/13 overstamp are incredibly rare,
and I believe they are more modern discoveries of error varieties, than when
this play was written.
