An experienced pilot would have done a 180 and returned back to his base, but of course this accident was needed for the plot. I split a gut when Charlie and the other searcher were heading back to base and there, in very plain sight, was this outlandishly YELLOW crashed piper cub standing out like a giant banana on a banana tree. It was still very visible seconds later when Jake fired the flare gun behind them. Good cinematography.

I know. There were some events in this movie that were not very believable, but the most irritatingly ridiculous was the concept that neither guy in the copter saw that freaking yellow plane after making two checks around the area, despite the fact that the copter and the plane are seen in the same shot. The camera sees all, I guess.
