Genie is too magic

Sorry, but Genie is too magic. In "The Return of Jafar", Genie claims to have lost just about all his magical powers, with only a little left in him. Now he can do just about anything.

No. He said "Maybe my powers aren't what they used to be. Let's say they're semi-phenmenal, nearly cosmic. But don't sell me short. I may be free. But I have some magic left in me."

reply

key word being "some" - he can't even do a simple magic trick and his little battle with Jafar nearly kills him (in a way).

He was hugely magic in the series too - it doesn't make sense, but it's Disney! (and as much as I love Disney movies with the exception of Snow White, they never seem to make much sense to me)

I'm confused does the Genie have magic powers or a little or none. I'm not acting like I'm stupid but in Aladdin the series Genie can do anything he likes. What I don't get is that he had powers in the first on some powers in the second one and I think alot of power in the third one. But he can do anything in the series. Please can someone explain it all to me please!

After the second movie I figured that Genie had lost a lot of his powers because he was set free. When you have a being with "phenomenal cosmic powers" you have to have some kind of control -- otherwise who knows what kind of phenomenal cosmic damage he could inflict on the universe? (Case in point: Jafar.) By enslaving genies, their powers are controlled. When a genie is set free, he (or she) has to lose some power, as payment for freedom.

I don't know exactly how to fit the show and the third movie into this scenario. Maybe Genie was slowly regaining some of his powers? I know he did a lot of flashy stuff in the third movie but I don't remember if he did any spectacular magic. As for the cartoons . . . well, it's a pretty handy plot device to get Al in an unsolvable jam and then have Genie pull some hocus-pocus to save him. (I know, that didn't happen a lot but did anyone else think that Al could do a bit more heroics himself rather than rely so heavily on Genie and carpet?)

perhaps after recently been freed his powers were, temporarily exhausted so to speak, and that they simply recharged to near phenominal but not quite by the 3rd movie? make sense to anyone or am I babbling lol

I find it a lot simpler to just ignore the second movie. It was horrible anyway.

Supermodels...spoiled stupid little stick figures mit poofy lips who sink only about zemselves.

reply

You can't ignore the second movie, because then the 3rd doesn't make sense. (Return of Jafar is great anyway)

I think that yeah, by the 3rd movie, during the many adventures around the world, the Genie learned how to do great tricks with limited magic power.
It makes sense.
Jasmine also learned to fight :P

Well, I can't not ignore the TV series because I haven't seen the most episodes.
In fact I've seen only like... 10 or 15.

Still, I don't feel that the story is incomplete.
The 3rd movie was done a way that you can fully understand the plot and anything without having watched the series, and I'm glad for that.

But the TV series is a nice fun spinoff. One day I'll download them from somewhere (if I find them somehow) and watch it from beginning to end.

I don't think genie used much magic in the first film so it's hard to tell. I know that he used big magic to create the parade for prince Ali but that was about it.

I don't think he can do that again cause I think it was still part of aladdins wish

reply

There can never be too much magic, as far as Genies go.
