Boring

I am a history teacher. I would never use this in my class, it was a struggle for ME to get through, punishing.

At least you're not a grammar teacher...

reply

No way. I'm currently watching it on Netflix streaming and liking this better than Burns' " Civil War " series actually .

reply

I totally agree with the OP ... BORING. Doesn't hold a candle to "The Civil War".

It's frightening (and a little sad) that as a history teacher you cannot grasp the usefulness and importance of this series as a learning tool due to the fact that it was'nt "entertaining enough... Let me guess- you're one of those young, cool, hip teachers who relates to her students as "peers" or "friends" perhaps?

Absolute troll nonsense! Nearly 20 years later, this documentary still stands up. Deep understanding does not come from sound bites. Learning requires an investment of time. Grow up!

If it is true that the OP does indeed teach history, then this is one of the saddest posts I have ever encountered on IMDb. Yet I seriously doubt that statement from the OP is true as their other posts usually employ vacuous "teen speak" (i.e. 'x or y SUCKS', or 'x or y is YUUUUUUGE(sic)')and the posts are mainly concerned with the looks of female actors.

My history teachers of the late 1970s/ early 1980s were of the time where it was different and innovative to use film, television, theatre and poetry as well as the standard text books to engender an interest and understanding of a topic. This encouraged a life long love of history in me. I also still remember with fondness, now almost 40 years later, a teacher who read each week to our class of enthralled eight year olds installments of Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe" giving an exciting glimpse into 12th century England and 'exotic characters' such as Robin Hood and Richard I. Perhaps the OP would consider this boring too. If the OP can not inspire their students with manageable installments of the wonderful documentary that is "The West" then they must be a very poor teacher and I can not imagine theminspiring anyone.

"The West" is one of my favourite documentaries that I have enjoyed for some eighteen years. It is certainly long and has a measured, gentle pace - yet it is a film of astonishing beauty, fascinating stories, inspiring music and wonderful speakers from the rich tones of N. Scott Momaday to the understated expertise of the co-writer of the series Dayton Duncan. It is brimming over with stories and moments of emotion and excitement that left me at times eager to learn more, at other times angry at the injustices, at others in tears hearing stories of brutality and, on occasion, finding small nuggets of hope in this troubled past. No, this beautiful documentary is NOT "boring". It only reflects poorly on the OP that this was all they could think to say about it.

For the love of humanity, do the world a favor and find a new line of work. You have no business teaching anything, let alone history.

Thank you Lisa john and everyone else who called out this poor excuse of a teacher .. This is partly why our schools are terrible.. I still find it hard to believe OP Is in fact a teacher ..

reply

Hmmmm!
Sad! :(😥

It's a long time since I was in school and I found history to be a boring subject then. "The West" is not my history, it is the history of a different nation to the one that I was born in, and I found it a fascinating series.
