Something I've always wondered...

Sorry if it's been asked before, but...is it coincidence that both Titanic's have Murdoch killing himself? I mean, it's supposed to be unproven, yet both versions have this same demise for him. Isn't that odd for both filmmakers to have just 'dreamed that up'? Or did Cameron steal the idea from this one since it was first?

No idea but according to Walter Lord's book "The Night Lives On" which explores some of the mysteries of the Titanic in detail, Murdoch was not the type of person to kill himself, in fact, a witness reported that the last time he'd seen Murdoch before jumping off the ship, he'd still been busy helping with the lifeboats.

However, Lord also writes that there were many rumours regarding Murdoch committing suicide, though nobody was ever able to prove anything. Perhaps the writers thought this a more dramatic end to the character and decided to go that route with him.

Murdoch's body was never recovered though, so nobody will ever know for sure.

Since this quicky TV movie was being filmed at the same time as Cameron's Titanic was being filmed, he was rather busy and I seriously doubt he "stole" anything from this production.
