That soundtrack sucks. Why did they choose those songs out of all that were featured on the show? I can't even remember when most of those listed above were featured. Many other songs were both 1) better and 2) more memorable for the way they were used on the show (for me at least). Why is the soundtrack so britpop heavy, while Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, Radiohead are missing? their music (Portishead in particular) was the most prominent and memorable on the show, I can't believe they aren't included!

IMO these definitely had to be on the soundtrack:

Portishead - one or two of these: Mysterons, It Could Be Sweet, Roads, Glory Box
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees or Street Spirit (Fade Away)
Texas - Insane (the use of this song in the episode 'The Secret of My Excess" was especially memorable)
Foo Fighters - Walking After You (used in a memorable way in one of the last episodes)
Tricky - Overcome or Hell Is Round The Corner
Smashing Pumpkins - Galapogos

better sorry than safe

Is there a definitive guide to every song featured?
I'm trying to find out if they used a song by the band Jack - called 'Filthy names' from the 'Pioneer Soundtrcks' Album.

I remember them playing the first Placebo album a lot. Maybe that was in the second series.

Ivana i noticed you're message and thought you might know the answer to my question seeing as you know your music I know it's been a while since this life was last on tele, but I was wanting to find out the track name and artist which was played in background of the first episode of the second series its about 10 minutes in, when egg is binning bottles from a previous night's party and marty freeman from the office steels money out of eggs room. The only way a can describe it, soft calm track. Kind of a Massive attack/tricky feel to it with a female vocalist. I havent heard it since. Do you know this? Cheers Darren

reply

Sorry for the belated reply, I didn't check this board for ages and only noticed your message today. I had to check my old This Life tapes. If you mean the scene where he talks to Egg and the scene where he steals the money, the song is "6 Underground" by Sneaker Pimps. If you mean the scene where Egg finds out he nicked the money, it's another song by Sneaker Pimps, "Walking Zero". They're on the same album, "Becoming X".

Cheers,
Ivana

some more:

during the party at the end of season 1 i heard

one love - the prodigy
sorted for es and wizz - pulp

also heard towards the end of the first series

3 - massive attack (whilst miles and milly are hanging out in their room at one point)

i must have had a prolific music spending spree during the mid 90s because nearly all the music that has been played in the house i own, heh. there's more i recognised, some are listed above and others i cant remember right now, currently watching the bbc repeats so will try to name any new ones i hear

reply

is there anywhere u can get the soundtrack now?

reply

This is forever ago, but I want to thank you for an informative and comprehensive answer. You have, in fact, helped :-) Thanks!

reply

I know from watching the repeats, I have heard Fluke's music played a bit in the background; great band :) Can't remember which songs though

Klaatu Barada n... Necktie... Nickel... It's an "N" word, it's definitely an "N" word!

reply

i am looking for websites too.

All i can say is that there is definitely some suede ( a lot of suede ), interestingly Ricky Gervais did manage Suede for a short while and was credited as musical advisor in one episode.

And also i have picked up some Sleeper, Manson, and Manic Street Preachers

And dont forget one of irelands most unheralded bands "WHIPPING BOY"
They had tonnes of songs on it!

Whipping Boy were fantastic. I've heard a reunion is on the cards.

iggy pop - "sweet sixteen" is the track i remember the most. it's playing in delilah's on/off boyfriend's car stereo in one episode.

I remember in '96ish they were promoting towards the end of the second series on BBC2 and played She's a Star by James to clips of Anna. I'm not particularly a James fan, but it changed that song for me and I've been fond of it ever since. Funny how films, TV, adverts etc can do that to you; it also happened to me with the Yellow Pages advert and Thank You For The Days by the Kinks.

The Smiths - Girlfriend In A Coma
Mansun - Taxloss

The 1st one is definitely in one of the cafe kitchen scenes. Mansun is played in a same setting but not sure if it is Taxloss or not.

reply

Oh my God, I remember the BBC2 promos playing James' She's a Star as well... It was advertising the episode where Anna gets Miles off the indecency and assault charges.

This whole thread is bringing back loads of memories... Portishead and Tricky obviously - I remember Mysterons and Glory Box being played in party scenes and Barnd New, You're Retro being played on Warren's stereo when Deliliah was going through his stuff.

Ha!

Anyone know what the song is when Miles walks in and announces he proposed to Francesca? Anna makes a joke saying "no wonder she went home" and Miles says she accepted.

Anna smiles and says "well... now there's a thing".

I can't decipher enough of the lyrics to google it sadly

I've got the soundtrack on CD. It's great, but it's also missing some brilliant tracks from the series. I think the people behind it were hoping to cash in on the popularity of Britpop in the 1990s.

You keep on reminding me of a darkness only I can see
