What happened to Jack?

I remember hearing that Judd Nelson was leaving the show after the third season, so I'm assuming that they had an episode planned to explain his leaving. Of course, David Strickland killed himself before the season was over, so the third season finale was all about Todd being missing and no one could find him.
Like I said, I'm assuming that they showed the Todd episode instead of the Jack episode, but does anyone know if the episode where Jack left was ever actually filmed? Because I've never seen it, and the series finale made it seem like Jack died.
This show has been in syndication since it was over, and most shows in syndication show the "alternate scenes" and "lost episodes", like with 3rd Rock from the Sun, when they re-ran their series finale, they had a special commentary from French Stewart about the "never-before-seen" alternate ending, where Dick comes back and takes Mary with him.
Anyway, point was, they've never showed an episode explaining Jack's absence in the final episode. Anyone know if there even was one?

Judd Nelson wanted to leave the show. He felt his relationship with Susan had gone as far as it was going to. He was also affected by Strickland's death. In the very next episode, the Gate was purchased by Ian (Ex-"Monty Python" Eric Idle).

......but they never explained what happened to Jack. The montage in the last episode made it seem like he died. I assume there is some lost episode somewhere in which Jack dies, that they didn't want to use after David Strickland's death.

Why do you assume Jack died? He sold The Gate, so therefore he no longer worked there - the end. That is what happened to Jack!

reply

...then why didn't he come back for the last episode? When they show the tape of Jack and Todd at the end, they make it sound like they're both dead.

reply

Jack did NOT die. He sold THE GATE and moved out of town.

Judd Nelson left the show and had NO intentions of coming back...EVER! Not even for the last episode.

I worked on the show the 1st 3 seasons, and Judd leaving was a result of David dying. There were other reasons, but that was a HUGE part of it. I left the show after David died as well, it was just too devastating. It crushed all of us, he was such a huge presence.

Jack did not die!!! He sold the Gate.

Thanks for clearing this up finally :-)

I don't think it *is* cleared up. I would still like to know what their plan was if David Strickland hand't died.

I think the man already answered your question...

He still would've left the show. The 'official' explanation was given in a earlier answer - the unofficial explanation was that him and Brooke Shields didn't exactly see eye to eye, and with her being the star, she always had the last word.
