Wearing Jeans = sex worker?

In 12x11 "Finding Rachel" where Nikki and the rest of the team travel to Zambia, she was told that some of the tribesmen were starring at her b/c she was wearing jeans and that wearing jeans meant she was a sex worker. Now I have lived in South Africa and while I know this was supposed to be Zambia, I've never heard such a thing. Anyone else know this to be an actual popular belief?

According to Rural Women's Sexuality, Reproductive Health, and Illiteracy by Gisele Maynard-Tucker, female sex workers in Senegal wear jeans and tight tops rather than traditional African garb. I suspect that this is also true in whichever African nations offer less-than-equal-rights for women -- places where "modesty" is expected of women, so they wear non-form-fitting attire.

A reporter friend of mine spent a few weeks in a Nigerian town (not truly rural, but neither a cosmopolitan area), and before she left, I lent her some loose, long-sleeved summer shirts -- she had been advised to dress modestly (to avoid bare arms/upper legs, to avoid garments that even hinted at the outline of her figure).
