Why was it canceled?

I won't to know what happened the show's ratings were high.

The one thing I really actually liked about this show was the Son of a Bitch song. Either because it was funny to hear on a saturday morning cartoon, or because that particular episode was only aired uncut the first time.

Might also explain the show's cancellation. Oh, well…

reply

Actually, I heard it was cancelled because some IDIOT complained about a certain line Colleen made involving a banana-shaped squeaky toy (I don't even get why that's a bad line, dogs love that kind of thing...)

reply

You have to be pretty sick, but think about bananas and what they resemble.

Irony is lost on audiences.
Sitting on the fence only gives you a sore bum.

I'm not sure why it was cancelled, but I can tell you that it was a stupid descision. Check out this site: http://members.tripod.com/~RRStuff/mcbrief.htm It doesn't belong to me and I'm just posting it because it has LOADS or Road Rover stuff. It isn't too active anymore but it's amazing and I recently asked the owner to put up the MIDI file of the original theme song, so now there is that too, theres also many pics of the Road Rovers, villians, weapondry and more, plus lyrics to all the songs and even translated into German and Spanish. I hope you decide to check this site out, they have cool video clips too.

The reason I believe Road Rovers was canceled was that someone sued Warner Brothers about the show saying that they copied his idea. I saw this somewhere on some Law site some time ago. All some people want is money and dont care about the joy a show can bring to millions of viewers.

Haha, good times. I was the one who provided the Spanish stuff. These days I could probably make better uploads of those files with the new stuff on my computer.

I still remember how most of the fans were writing to save the show, but despite our efforts we were unable to do much. We sent tennis balls to Tom Rueger (his dog was the basis for Hunter). I think some of us even sent ideas for new episodes. All I got for my trouble was a Road Rover litograph which I have sadly misplaced somewhere and an XL Road Rover t-shirt with "bite me" on the back. I know that if I truly look for that signed picture I'll find it.. just gotta figure out where to look.

reply

Hey everyone. Wait a few years. I think the Road Rovers will resurface in an unexpected way. I'm no prophet, but just give it time. Anything that good just can't die.

reply

it won't be back, it was cancelled, the only thing that turner is having cancelations on NOW is cartoon Networks [adult swim] block.............

*light bulb apears above head*

if they aired pee-wee for like 2 or 3 weeks.......

and kids wb and the rights to the show were OWNED by turner

and turner OWNS willams street (adult swim HQ) THEY WILL PROBLABLY AIR IT!

the recently cancelled "12 Oz Mouse"

reply

I'm not a prophet either, but if a show that good was planning on resurfacing they probably would've done it sometime in the past 10 years.

So far it seems squall might be right... its a damn shame too, that show was and still is my favorite, and not sure why it ended myself but whatever it was or whoever that was the reason for the cancellation of the show can never be enough.

reply

Supposedly the Son of A bitch song was the reason, they (WB) also cited poor ratings (THAT is questionable).

reply

In all actuality the reason was the Enforcement of the Educational Television act. Three hours a week must be devoted to Educational children's programming, Hence the reason for The Aimaninac, RoadRovers Freakazoid Cancellations there were other factors too, , like poor ratings in middle America. but it was fun for older kids a least ..

This may have been alluded to before, but I'm going to say it anyway. I think the main weakness of the show was that its conflict was conflicting with itself. It used a lot of what you might call "higher" humor (as opposed to slapstick) in the form of irony, verbal humor, situational humor, etc. that you usually find in programs aimed at adults. It was also fairly topical in its humor. Let's face it, when Bill Clinton saw something going wrong and called for Hillary, barely any of the kids the show was aimed at could understand it (just as I'm sure many of the target audience couldn't get how hilarious Freakazoid's portrayal of Henry Kissinger was). Another example was "Hunter's Heroes" which had overtones of "The Great Escape" and "Hogan's Heroes"- both shows that most of the Fox Kids audience wouldn't know about, but I did and, therefore, appreciated the humor. Much of this humor is better suited with the same, more adult, audiences who watch Futurama, the Simpsons, and Saturday Night Live. There were also things like ongoing sub-plots. Take the Hunter/Colleen relationship, for example. How many other children's programs have a kind of love interest plot going where one character is genuinely hurt/upset by the actions of the other? However, much of the stylings were more child-oriented, such as the multitude of round, soft, "friendly" shapes and the incessant canine theme. Then there are issues like the character animations where the physical geometry of a character could change (Sometimes the sides of Exile's neck were vertical, giving him a head that looked like a husky's, and other times they bowed out, giving him a dome-like appearance).

I think the premise of the show, and possibly the show itself, could have been / could be resurrected; but I think it would need to follow it's humor, its strongest suit, dress up the animation, not be quite so goofy, and be more focused in regards to the audience it pursued- a chance that this great show was denied because it only got one season. I'm a cop now, and I have a very serious life; but I still like to take a moment now and then and think back to the Road Rovers.

The show had some jokes aimed for adults, but there was funny stuff that kids would like too (like how Shag always held missile launchers backwards). I think that good cartoons are able to provide humor for older and younger viewers. It's like my sixth grade literature teacher said, when we were watching "The Black Cauldron" (we had just read "The Book of Three"). Kids will watch a show and their parents will probably be watching it with them. If the show only contains kid humor, then the parents will be bored out of their minds.

Maybe it is a bit too early still for me to judge it, but I have been watching the first three episodes... and I'm not impressed with the show at all. While the style is cool and all, the story, the jokes, and the characters just are bad in my opinion. None of the characters are really likable and have the personality of a brick, the stories are nothing great and are rarely consistent with each other, the jokes are a hit or (most of the time) a miss for any age group, etc. And the show is so hardly believable; a bomb blows this guy's lab to hell and back, but he walks away just dandy... and in the same episode, a bomb goes off on this guy's lap, and it doesn't even wrinkle his clothing... Looney Tunes were more realistic that this show... and the catch phrases by some characters become annoying; "Don't be a weird boy" was alright the first time we heard it, but by the third episode they ran it into the ground and I got tired of hearing it already... and Blitz always wanting to kiss himself... At this point, I'm having a hard time wanting to watch the next episodes.

It's hard to believe though that I don't like a show like this, but I love Freakazoid and Animaniacs... those shows had heart though, while this show just seems so uninspired.

People are always wondering why it got canceled, but as I watch it I can't help but feel I know the answer to that; the show is boring. Perhaps it is a guilty pleasure at best, but nothing more.
