Great show... but the Fan Base....??

Remember WENN was always one of my favorite things to tune in to on AMC- before they axed it, of course. Now the Network has gone from showing classic movies, to parading out an endless catalogue of 70s and 80s forgettables.

But, Remember WENN remains a fond, and enjoyable memory.... an excellent tribute to a gone, but not forgotten era.

Until the series is released to DVD, all that remains of it is a few fan-oriented groups and websites on the internet... and that is where my big "go figure" comes in.

What's up with Remember WENN fans !?

Half of them are rabidly devoted to the character of Hilary Booth. And these people treat the show's leading character with the kind of contempt one normally reserves for someone who *really exists*, and has done you some terrible wrong !

Like, say, burning your house down, or something.

And the other half does a turnabout- they are rabidly devoted to Betty Roberts (the series' lead), and treat the Booth character like some kind of *real, living, breathing* pariah.

And these two factions seem to also transfer their feelings for these characters off onto their fans....

This creates a *very* uncomfortable atmosphere for the casual fan to join a fan group... and I think is a bad reflection on what was, and still is a very good show !

Oh, yes. I remember CJ very well. And all of the other characters. Especially Mackie Bloom, my personal favorite (largely because of his resemblance to silent comedian Chester Conklin).

Remember WENN was a great show. And I still enjoy the episodes of it I have on tape.

And it's great to see a fan of the show that loves, and mmisses the show- and all of it's wonderful characters !

Omigosh ! Someone who remembers Chester Conklin ! I'm impressed. Chester's largely forgotten nowdays, unless you're a fan of silent comedies (which I happen to be- a very devoted fan), or a big fan of The Three Stooges. Chester appeared in several of their earlier shorts with Curly.

Favorite WENN epsidoes ?

Hmmmm....

The Emperor Smith
Valentino Speaks
A Capital Idea
The Diva that Wouldn't Die
Magic
In The WENN Small Hours
Two For the Price of One
And If I Die Before I Sleep
Birth of a Station

That'll do for starters....

Then ignore it. Seriously, there are plenty of people in the fandom that don't care one bit about which is the "best" character and like them all equally. Yeah, some people do go overboard, but you're going to find that with any fandom on any show. It's not an excuse, but it's certainly not unusual.

So saying it's split down the middle for two characters is a gross overstatement and false.

No, it is neither a gross overstatement, nor is it false. Or, perhaps I should say it wasn't a false statement when I made it, or from my personal experience.

I'm sure that 100% of the fandom for Remember WENN does not behave as I described. But, a large majority of the fans on the Yahoo group devoted to the show did so, when I was a member.

And that's what I was refering to in my post.

I'm sincerly sorry if I've offended you in some way, as it appears I have. But, I did experience a very cold and callous hatred emanating from one portion of the fandom and directed towards another.

It was not a comfortable experience for me, and I felt it detracted from my ability to be a fan of the show, who was also active in the internet community.

Maybe we are discussing two different Yahoo groups. Or maybe the group has changed since I was there. Whatever the case, I know what I experienced as a member, and it seriously tainted my fondness for the show.

I'm very sorry if I offended you by recounting my experience. But, I promise you that I am speaking from experience, and not making up anything that I described here.

I loved the show and hated when they cancelled it! I was always partial to Scott Sherwood. The last time I saw Kevin O'Rourke in anything he was playing Spencer Tracy in "The Aviator". I'd love to see it out on DVD!
