Their 4th child

I know Nathaniel wasn't their bio-child, but didn't they have a 4th child, a girl, that died after birth. Did they name her? What was her name? and Was she the youngest?

reply

Yes, they did have another child. Her name was Grace. She died in the hospital a few days later and were not able to bring her home. She was the youngest.

Was this shown on the series or just talked about as a memory?

reply

about the second season clair gave birth to their daughter grace. she only lived few days and died in the hospital. Gerald McRaney gave rather telling poerformace showing the anguish of father who looses a child. i can still see the tears running down his cheeks and hear him screaming out his frustrations in the scene. It was an actuall event in the second season. not a memory sequence.

I vaguely remember the epasode. I remember Grace was facing the wrong way coming out. What did she die of? If I remember correctly, she died. Then she wasn't mentioned after that at all. Is that right?

reply

Grace may have been a premie.
I recall this episode. The doctor came to Russ and Clare who were in a waiting room. She tells them it is time to take Grace of the vent and they can hold her. At first, Clare thinks the baby has improved and it is good news, and then realizes they have given up hope. Very sad scene.

The green family had 2 sons and 2 daughters (this is not counting Nathaniel who is their nephew but they did have guardianship of him)

When Josh was about 2 they had a second son (this was before Dinah) who's name was Caleb. He was stillborn. Josh got to pick out his name. The family does a bit of remembrance about this in one of the seasons.

So if you want to count Nathaniel as their son (since they had guardianship of him...) there were 5 Green children.

If I remember correctly Grace came down with type of botulism or something similar which a lot of preemies come down with but recover from. My youngest granddaughter spent an additional week in the NICU because of it after her birth at 36 weeks. She is now fine and a normal 3-year-old. The final scenes show the Greenes giving the bassinette and clothing, etc to a couple who had next to nothing for their expected child. THe whole episode was quite a tear-jerker.

yep, I just re-watched it. Actually, I think it was a staph infection. The last part where Claire rings the bell was very emotional.

Good catch about their other biological son. The other son (whom Josh remembered but Dinah did not) was only mentioned in one episode, "The Secret" from season 1. But the child's name was actually Daniel, not Caleb.
