In defense of Kat!

I'm always a little bit disheartened at the Kat bashing that goes on at IMDb and other PR boards. Kat's actually one of my favorite rangers, and I thought she and Tommy were a cute couple (Kim belonged with Jason in my opinion). I'm not saying everybody HAS to like Kat... I'm just saying that there are fans of the lovely Pink Zeo Ranger who deserve to have their say without fear of being slammed or flamed for expressing their opinions. So I started this thread for people to express why they like Kat just as much, if not more than, Kimberly. However, for those who dislike Kimberly (as I do), please keep the negative comments towards the character civilized and don't attack Kim fans. We don't need to stoop to the Kat-bashers' level.

I to like Kat as an ranger, She's my favorite Pink ranger because of her skills. Still Kim will always be number one as an female ranger. Kat is an top five choice but she doesn't have Kim's looks, and skills. I like Kat and all but that's why everyone else loves Kim and not Kat. But like I said, Kat was an bit better then Kim.

Holy Hell...

Let me get this straight... There's absolutely no chance for Kim IMO. Kat was (and always will be) my FAVOURITE Pink Ranger! From the very first moment I saw her on the show, I had a total crush... Well... That's now almost 10 years ago (in germany Zeo first aired in 1997) and I must say, that I'm still very attracted of her.

One last thing to say to all you out there: I'm a Kat-fanatic and I'm damn proud of it! :)

agree. thats when i stoped watching. i really havnt watched a single episode after she left. only now im trying to catch up on the earlier seasons.

Zeo remains my favorite season. It was all over once Turbo started. I still think Zeo is the best.

In my opinion Kat got a raw deal as she was replacing a character that was an original, and was very popular. To compare it to sports, it was like trying to replace a coaching legend who got fired (like Bob Knight). Though she was replacing my favorite female ranger, and in my opinion the hottest, I had no problem with Kat.

reply

I like Kat. One thing I like is that she's sort of the opposite of Kim. While Kim was flashy and extroverted, Kat was quiet, soft-spoken and introspective. That appeals to me a lot more.

I also agree that she and Tommy are a great couple. It's interesting that like Tommy, she first encountered the Rangers while being mind-controlled by Rita, but unlike Tommy, Kat managed to snap out of it on her own. Plus, on two separate occasions she was willing to give herself up to Zedd and Rita (which must have been a pretty frightening prospect for her). And she was smart enough to escape and recover the Pink coin. You can see why Zordon knew she was the ideal choice for the next Pink Ranger.

"Often times I would never see her in episodes do anything powerful as a ranger, I only saw her get slapped around by enemies and get her butt kicked."

No offence, but that isn't entirely so. One of my favourite episodes is 'Every Dog has his Day' which is a Kat-centric episode. Besides having a plot that focuses on her, it also shows that she's no pushover. She single-handedly defeated a group of Cogs and held her own quite well against the Digster robot.

Kat in Mighty Morphin is great. I love her in that ninja suit :D

I like Kim, I always liked her. But, when I heard that everybody just hated Kat for replace a character that wanted to leave already in the beginning of season 3, I just started to love her.

Still I would like to see Kat (and Kim) with another ranger than Tommy, in the end... But he is okay.

reply

Kim will always be my favorite.

Kat never got to fight on screen as a human the way Kim did, so I can't defend her combat skills.

Kat was actually chosen by KIMBERLY not Zordon. I actually liked Kat. I never despised her because it was NOT her fault Kimberly was gone. I always wanted Kim on the show, but I even felt that way when Cassie came in the picture, did I dislike her? NO

I think one problem is people take this stuff tooo FAR. Calling Kimberly a B*tch for dumping Tommy (the letter didn't give respect to her character or Tommy, she would NOT have told him she loved him like a brother after all the crap she did with and for him)and then being mad at Tommy for dating someone else? Mad at Kat because she helped Tommy get over her and then he fell for her? She didn't do nothing, although I always felt she liked him because even under the spell...when it would ware off she still showed signs of little SUBTLE affection.

Kat was the new pink and I tend to love the pink rangers XD so she was a shoe-in for next best thing. I liked how replacements were NOTHING like the character they replaced. Some couldn't live up to fighting standards, (like Aisha didn't fight nowhere near as good as Trini, she mostly did kicks to the guts and flipped enemies as a human)but they all as far as character's go (cept poor Rocky who was highly under-developed, and I know Justin was somewhat annoying at times, but he was one of us so it was kinda cool)were good.

Kat and Kim fans should quit trying to bash the other and just accept the character's high's and low's. And we all know most of them were highs.

"Kat never got to fight on screen as a human the way Kim did, so I can't defend her combat skills."

She did in Turbo. But it wasn't her fault: no one in MMPR season 3 and Zeo did that..

Yes, the letter was bad (the brother thing) but it had to be short and direct. As a kids show the things can't be very much developed. Besides no one could brought Amy Jo back at that time.

Anyways, the major comments you see is bashing Katherine or even the actress always because the fact that she replaced Kimberly (even so some people say that's not the reason lol).

"She didn't do nothing, although I always felt she liked him because even under the spell...when it would ware off she still showed signs of little SUBTLE affection"

In the show when a ranger is evil some things are brought up: in the Turbo Movie, Jason seems to have a little problem with Tommy because they were rivals and he became the leader..

"Kat and Kim fans should quit trying to bash the other and just accept the character's high's and low's. And we all know most of them were highs."

Although I completely agree with that, we have to be neutral here and agree that Kat is almost always the one to be bashed. Definitely not Kimberly.

Like, that was the first reason that made me love Katherine. When I was a kid I never remember her and Kimberly was definitely my favourite xD I really don't understand some Kimberly fans... she was the first and the most popular ranger, why all this? It only make Kimberly less than what she really was.

reply

I was never a big fan of Kat's but I didn't hate her. I would have liked to see her have an identity outside of Tommy and Kim (whom I loved as couple). I mean she took over for Kim which would make some people not like her then she became Tommy's next interest which made it even worse they barly gave the girl a chance.
The thing that annoyed me other then the letter which was completely lame and not something the Kim we knew would write is that I felt out of all the male characters Kat had the least chemistry with Tommy all thier moments seemed akward to me I think she was a better fit with Jason they looked so good together and just seemed like a likely golden couple no pun intended. And I think they went to alot of trouble to break Tommy and Kim up and start Tommy and Kat to completely drop it in Turbo. I was surprised when I watched Turbo because there seems to be nothing between them at all.

reply

I guess the producers just didn't want to make it a soap. That's why we don't see Tommy and Katherine kissing.

And Tommy was always the same, either with Kimberly or with Katherine. Kim was pretty dense and that made the couple more "alive". Kat was quiet and shy and that make them more mature, and for some people, that fact meant no chemistry.

reply

At first yeah Kim was immature I mean she was 15 years old in the first season but I think she grew alot through the years and I don't think Kat was anymore mature just more introverted. I don't think maturity had anything to do with it personally I just think Tommy and Kim were more natural and comfortable with each other. And the whole Tommy and Kat relationship felt a little uneven to me yes he liked her but I think the feelings were stronger on her side. He just nevered seemed to be there for her as much as he was for Kim and I don't just mean in a fight, he wasn't at graduation or when she had her dance school tryout. Personally I thought Tommy and Kim made a better team and couple.

reply

Well that's two different points of view about the same thing: for me Tommy was always around Kimberly in everything she did because she was more needy or at least because in everything that she does everybody is there lol

She's more popular definitely even in the team and that made the show only live for them. But that was natural 'cause Tommy and Kim were developed to catch feminine audience but they went too far with their importance in my pov.. the other rangers were completely forgotten.

With Kat is different, just like the other rangers and that's what I like about her. And actually I like Kimberly much more in the first season. Since Jason, Zack and Trini left the show became only for Tommy and Kim and she became more valley.

Though I really like them both but they're completely different. People started to like Kat when they just accept that Kim left because she wanted to and Tommy ain't the center of everything lol Kat is just one of the team and she's cool.

reply

I agree I liked Kat in Turbo. I liked seeing her independent of Tommy with her dancing and student teaching and she kicked Numbor's butt! She just seemed more comfortable with being a ranger. That's one of the things I like about Turbo, Tommy wasn't around as much so the others got more story the downside alot of it was Justin!

reply

For me Kat was always the same, either in Turbo, Mighty Morphin or Zeo. She was always very independent despite of Tommy are always around the group and her.

She kicked a monster in Zeo too all by herself and in Mighty Morphin she kicked the Tengas buts alone w/ the Ninjetti power. The rangers were always together for doing that. She did almost everything on her own.

I think the bashing of Kat comes from the emotional attachment a lot of people had with Kimberly. She was the original 5 and was one of the most poplar characters in the entire series. I, for one was pissed when Kim left and started to hate the series. It was Tommy that kept me watching until he left in Turbo.

reply

I was never a huge Kim fan, so it was really not a lot of love loss when she left. I liked Kat's personality a lot more and I think she definitely had chemistry with Tommy in her own way. The writers could have done more with them, but like someone said earlier, Season 3 became the Tommy/Kim show and I think they wanted to keep it a little more balanced. This is why we haven't even seen a kiss from the rangers since them (even ones with bigger commitments like engagements and stuff). Andros and Ashley from PRiS actually *did* kiss in their season, but they cut it out in the final, so it's obvious the writers wanted to take a different direction and limit the romance.

Basically, for the Tommy/Kat we did get, I thought it was good.

Kat is the most interesting character to me.

I could never help but have a dislike for Kat. Yeah, she was a sweetheart, but I felt she (or rather, the writers) tried way too hard to make her Kim's replacement in all things, no just the pink ranger position. She also seemed a bit too nice, like I couldn't buy her character as a real person. All the other characters had believable flaws to some extent, but it seemed like they kept trying to portray Kat as the perfectly pure-hearted person.
