Connection to the movies?

I've just started watching the series.
Just a question ... It's supposed to be based on the films "Poltergeist". I am not sure about the connection, though?

I think the connection is supposed to be with Zelda Rubinstein's character Tangina from the original Poltergeist. It was never outright stated but I believe we're meant to infer that she was a member of the Legacy and that's why she was so knowledgeable about the supernatural.
