30 years ago, John Winchester awoke in the middle of the night to find his wife, Mary, pinned to the ceiling, bleeding from the stomach, and set aflame in front of him by evil supernatural force. He managed to get his sons, 4-year-old Dean and six-month old Sam, out of the house, but Mary was killed leaving John devastated and their lives were never the same again. After his wife's murder John is determined to protect his sons from the supernatural thing that killed her. John took an interest in the supernatural and the unexplained and raised the boys as warriors - with skills to fight back against the unknown and protect the innocent. Present day, John has raised his sons to fight supernatural forces, to hunt and kill evil things that go bump in the night. Demons, ghosts, even cryptologic creatures. However, they can't find the thing that killed Mary. With his constant clashes with his father, Sam becomes disenchanted with the hunter's lifestyle, and goes away to college, where he
falls in love with a girl named Jessica Moore. After years of estrangement, Dean shows up at Sam and Jess' one night to ask for Sam's help to look for their father who had gone missing during a "hunting trip". At first, Sam is reluctant to be roped back into the world of hunting and prefers his "safe" normal life he had managed to make for himself with Jess but when he finds out John was on a supernatural hunting trip he agrees to help look for his father. But when he finds Jess dead through the same M.O. as their mother, he sets out with Dean to find their father by using their dad's Hunter journal which contains the knowledge their dad accumulated during his decades of hunting the supernatural following their mother's murder and supernatural leads they can find across the country, hoping they can track him down. When they finally meet up with John, he reveals he knows what killed their mother, a demon, and has found a way to track and kill it. Meanwhile, Sam starts to develop a
frightening ability of visions of people dying before it actually happens. These visions are somehow connected to the demon who murdered his mother and its mysterious plans that seem to be all about Sam. When their father dies strikes a deal to keep the boys alive with the very same demon that had killed his wife, the brothers, now alone and without their mentor, are determined to finish the crusade their father started. But disturbing revelations about Sam's part in the demon's apocalyptic plans are presented when John's dying last words to Dean are revealed.

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) have spent the last eight years battling the things that go bump in the night. Over the years, with the help of the angel Castiel (Misha Collins), and the King of Hell, Crowley (Mark A. Sheppard), the Winchesters have straddled the line between good and evil.
Last season, the boys faced their most important mission yet: close the gates of Hell once and for all. With the help of the prophet Kevin Tran (Osric Chau), Sam and Dean set forth to perform the Trials required to close the gates. While the boys worked to shut Crowley and his minions down for good, a new threat to his reign emerged: the Knight of Hell, Abaddon (Alaina Huffman). As the struggle for Hell’s command began, Castiel set about his own set of Trials. With the aid of God’s scribe Metatron (Curtis Armstrong), Cas went on a mission to close the Gates of Heaven. However, he found out too late that the Scribe had nefarious intentions, and Cas paid the price. His Grace forcibly removed, Castiel watched as Metatron’s machinations came to fruition – and the angels of Heaven fell.
Season Nine begins with the fallout from the angels’ descent to Earth. Sam and Dean are faced with a world inhabited by thousands of powerful beings who immediately begin to form their own agendas. Before they can tackle the threat of the “loose nukes” roaming the countryside, Sam and Dean must face their most personal battle yet. Meanwhile, Castiel awakes to find himself more vulnerable than he’s ever been as he is fully human and the angels are looking for revenge and Castiel will do as far as they're concerned. As the threat of the angels escalates, the boys are tasked with finding a way to reopen the gates of Heaven and send the Host packing. But a dark secret hangs over Dean’s head – has he finally crossed the line to protect his family?
