Why no terestrial repeat?

I loved this show when it was first on and although I was very young (about eleven) and by rights should not have been watching it, nor understood it, I did. There are still things I remember from the show now, that made an impact on me, like the Cruddas Park flats and the miners strikes. Although brought up in a relatively wealthy family, these events had a knock on effect in the community I was brought up in.

What gets me is, why is it that as ground breaking and costly as it was at the time series has not been repeated on terestrial TV?!
We have to put up with endless repeats of "Little Britain" and "Open All Hours" (which by the way I'm not slating, just using to prove a point), whilst quality dramas like this disappear into Auntie's vaults.

I think it would be of great public interest for this to be seen again by a new generation and not just Northeners or specifically Geordies, but throughout the UK. It documents a time in our country's history that has shaped who we are as a nation today.

What's more with the recent high profile roles of Christopher Eccleston and Daniel Craig, I thnk it would recieve a long over due and welcome recpetion if it were to be re-aired.

I agree! It was repeated once on BBC 2 in 1997 but I agree it would be great if it were repeated again.

I seem to remember it was repeated very quickly after its first transmission - was it because it was dusrupted by Princess Diana's death or something?

Not sure I understand. Why would her death have led it to be repeated more speedily?
Think it was repeated about 18 months after its first showing (about the time of Diana's death).
