Sorry rooting on this board so bringing an old thread to life but looking at some of the dismal offerings in the intervening period I'm tempted to say we'd have to go back to the 70's. Jon did mention the Long Firm and much as I thought it was ok, it had more to do with the fact for me that Mark Strong is such an excellent actor so he'd make a lot good.

Not British this but American, The Wire reminds me a lot of Our Friends In The North in the way that it features an ensemble cast, it takes a look at many different walks of life in (mostly) one town, has a main story focused on police and corruption, and it's also brilliantly-acted and written.

In terms of a similar British series...I'll have to get back to you on that.

Twin Peaks is similar in tone. Especially the early episodes of OFITN

If you videoed the real thing it would be in a video, but it would be real as well

'The Runaway' is a recent British series that I'd recommend. It's set in Soho during the 60s and 70s just like OFITN, and one of the main characters, Eamonn, goes through some very similar character developments to Geordie.

An old thread, I know, and what I want to mention has been mentioned before.
I didn't know about White Heat when it aired but sometime last year I came across it because of the cast and started watching it without knowing much about it. I quickly saw the similarity to OFitN in that it is the same basic idea, perhaps a lighter "junior" version.

It did (does) get lambasted from some quarters and I can see the flaws but I enjoyed it quite a lot.

I recommend everyone to have a look. With Claire Foy, Lee Ingleby MyAnna Buring, even Gina McKee in a small but arresting role, it's certainly worth an hour or two to judge for yourself.

IMO
