favorite character

mine was the Marquis de Carabas. so what character did everyone else like?

reply

I haven't seen the mini series, but after reading the novel, I concur; the marquis de Carabas was probably my favorite character. Of course, each of them had such idiosyncratic, individualistic personalities, that it's difficult to choose.

I related more to Richard; he deals with his situation in much the same way you would expect anyone to. It makes him wonderfully accessible; you can look at his reactions and say, "Yeah, that's pretty much what I would have said."

Then there's Door. A strong woman from a noble background. She's the LADY Door, and yet, she can't seem to eat anything without talking with her mouth full.

Even Croup and Vandemar, horrible sub-human characters, had their own charm. That scene in which Croup expertly throws knives between his fingers, and then Vandemar "shows him how it should be done": wonderfully, darkly hilarious. Vandemar's last words, "Bye bye": classic.

But, back to my first point. Yes, I'd have to say that the marquis de Carabas was my favorite character. Why? Because I trust him to be despicable, but not half as despicable as he thinks he is. I always love to be surprised by a character.

Good question. I hope others give you their own impressions.

yea, I have not seen the series yet, but I am going to soon, once my order come into the store.

I read the book as well a couple years ago, and I would have to say that Hunter was my favourite character.
1. because she was strong
2. because she was mysterious
and 3. because she was really brave.

And the part when you realize she was helping out the enemy the entire time, it's like "i would have never expected hunter to do that" because she was lady Doors bodyguard, it's awesome. Even when the angel islington turns out to be evil as well! everyone turns their backs on eachother. wow!
amazing book

I didn't have any favourite character. I read the book first, and my favourite
character in the book was the Marquis De Carabas. Then I checked to see if
there was a film/TV Series, and there happened to be a TV Series. When I
brought the TV Series, the cast was not how I imagined the characters, however
I still enjoyed it. My favourite character in "Neverwhere" 1996 would be
Mr Croup, Mr Vandemar and the Angel Islington.

I have only read the book, about a 10 times now, looking forward to tracking down the DVD.

My favorite character, by far, is Mr. Croup.

I enjoy his relationship to Vandemar, but I just enjoyed him more.

I have to agree. Croup is absolutely amazing. I liked him more than the Marquis even. Just, the way they played off each other (in the book) was amazing.

I am also searching for this DVD. Or hopefully, he'll fulfill the promise he made at the end of Stardust to make this into a movie.

I guess I have always rooted more for the villan. I think it takes more as an author to wirte a memorable, and even likable villan than it is to design a hero. Something about the mind of the antagonist, it must come across genuine, yet not cliche, such as the classic hand wringing, mustache twirling, proclaimer of "Evil!"

That's why I like Croup. Vandemar is somewhat of a simpleton, not quite a lacky, he is a partner, but he is afforded the excuse of being the brawn of the duo. Croup is the mind of the two and yet he does not fall into the pitfall of evil, only oppertunistic, sociopathic to a degree, and bored. That is what I love most, while the pursuit of the simple pleasures of violence are prevelant in the character, boredom is a much larger motivater. He conveys his age and his shortened attention span. Immortality seems to be wearing on him, like his freying suit.

He is deliciously cruel, morbidly funny, and remnantly human, much more than I can say for most of the villans one would grow to know and forget in fantasy novels.

Islington. It's just the fact he's so... scary.

And sexy

The Marquis, and also the Angel Islington. One of the bad guys but a very interesting character in both the book and the TV series - and in the TV series, very well played by the lovely Peter Capaldi.

Look at him! Look at Jeff Wode!

I haven't seen the series, but I read the book.

My favorite characters by far are Mister Croup and Mister Vandemar (I like to lump them up as one being. Sort of like Fred and George from HP. They just seem like one wouldn't exist without the other). They're probably in my top fav characters in literature now. They make me laugh.
After them it would be the marques de Carabas. I dunno, I sort of relate to him in a strange way. I just understood him.

Book was amazing though. I kindof don't want to see the series. I'm afraid it'd ruin it for me.

Yes, Croup and Vandemar do come as a package deal, don't they? I barley even separated them as different people when I began both the series and the book. They're great villians though- very articulate and twisted, with a slice of camp.

The characters are all splendidly crafted, which is a vast part of Neverwhere's appeal. The marquis is charasmatic and witty, so of course he would be a popular character. I love when he comes back from the dead and he's so casual about the entire ordeal (no pun intended).

Richard is adorable though. I love the trolls. They're so random and just add a wonderful little quirk that does not make sense to anybody, including the person who inhabits the quirk (much like authentic human nature).

Door's quite likeable too, but she does not have as colourful a character as the marquis and Richard.

I also found Jessica kind of funny and her male companion during the museum scene. I can't remember his name, but I remember he was really funny in the book.

Hunter's kind of blah. The actress who played her did not possess the strongest acting ability and her character was already rather annoying in the first place.

Rock stars. Is there anything they don't know?

hunter, the marquis and croup. all three had me laughing.

Croup and Vandemar. The scene in episode... three, I think, where they're walking past one of the lions in Trafalgar Square, is absolutely hilarious - but as Croup says, just because someone's funny, it doesn't mean they're not dangerous.

I wasn't surprised to see Clive Russell as Vandemar, either - having seen Lenny Henry's later series "Hope and Glory", in which Russell also appears, it just seems right for him to be playing a character who is essentially a dour Scots hitman. :)

Richard was my favorite because he was like the lost toddler of the group, and he has a great heart.
