Rhod Gilbert

Is killing Buzzcocks! He's terrible.

Him changing and saying lines from songs was probably funny one time but repeating a poor joke is just not funny.
His next lines props are useless, the teams just stare at him blankly.
I've seen his stand up shows and he's funny but just not very good doing buzzcocks week in week out. I'd prefer they went back to guest hosts or find someone else.

What's orange and sounds like a parrot?

I wanna give him another series, to settle in a bit more. It feels a bit like the writers and Rhod are being a little too nice to the musical guests. I've seen his stand up too, so I know he can let loose. I think that needs to be tapped into, and hopefully another series he'll become more comfortable in the role.

I also agree with the OP, I don't think Rhod Gilbert is the perfect choice as a permanent host. He just doesn't fit the format. I think there are show where he would be much better as a host, team captain or regular guest.

But frankly, I've lost interest in the show several series' ago. Not only had there been some really boring/bad guest hosts, but I've never been to fond of Jupitus, and Fielding, although I liked him at first, is really getting on my nerves, with his attention-grabbing ego. Every episode he's like "Look at me!" "Look at my new fancy outfit!".
Hughes and Bailey have never been like that, although there have been the occasional short remarks about their looks or Sean's poetry or whatever, but it usually only were SHORT remarks (and mostly not positive ones). You would have never heard Sean say or even imply how cute he is, how cool he is, how great his poetry, etc. And I think Fielding also isn't as funny as them either (maybe in a more infantile way). I guess a large percentage of Fielding's fans are just young girls who fancy him because of his looks and the way he likes to present himself.

Turns out you were right OP.

I started watching it again. Gilbert might not have been the best choice, but I like to have some consistency. With a guest host too often I felt let down. Most of them were not able to read out the jokes correctly and the show felt more and more run by the team captains.
Lamarr and Amstell both built up their quizmaster persona, with their mannerisms and running gags. Jokes are a competition of wit, which just works when the rules are clear. The consistency allowed them to do stuff a guest captain never could. Gilbert never got the opportunity to get there in one season, there was a huge potential unused.

He spent far too long kissing up to the celebrities, instead of either joking with them are taking the piss. In the end it just became three people pissing around, expecting people to be entertained by it and their in jokes.

I don't think another series would of been any different, it'd of just been as tired. I don't know why Gilbert got the job, it's usually about who you know, but there were far better choices.

I don't think any of it was challenging enough, if at all, and everyone just got far too comfortable.
