Mark Lamarr Episodes..

I wish 'Dave' would repeat the older episodes. Lamarr was a great host and when it was funny, it was REALLY funny.

And if, you know, your history...it's enough to make your heart go whoooooahh

Older is ALWAYS best in all walks of life!

Lamarr was the best host in my opinion. I hated Amstell as a host.
While I'm at it Mark Ronson was the worst host in the history of the show.

Totally agree. Lamarrs presence and attitude shaped the show for me. When he left and that dweeb Amstell took his place it went rapidly downhill.

I loved Lamarrs sarcasm and humour, Amstell has nothing going for him. He is only hosting the show now because he is "young" and "hip" (I am 22 btw, not sure I can say that) and I guess Lamarr is too old... Bailey, Jupitus and Lamarr carried NMTB and it died with them.

Er...he hasn't hosted it for two years...

Personally I thought Amstell was a great host, and frequently hilarious.

Doesn't effect the integrity of my post. Doesn't change my opinion. And "frequently" hilarious is something Lamarr wasn't... he is consistently hilarious.

Oh don't get me wrong - I thought Lamarr was a superb host, but I thought Amstell did a great job too.

Funnily enough, I saw Lamarr live years ago, back when all he'd done was "The Word" and obviously never expected much, but I have to admit, the routine he did that night is STILL the funniest thing I've ever seen any stand-up comedian do, and he wasn't even a stand-up comedian!

Amstell was also pretty great, but Lamarr was king. He kept the show afloat for 9 years. I dunno about anyone else, but Amstell seemed to run out of steam by about his 3rd or 4th year hosting the show. The thing you have to remember is, Amstell could only really do witty put downs and light satire. Lamarr could do pretty much everything with regards to hosting a comedy panel show: Wit, sarcasm, prop-comedy, satire, sketch-comedy, subversion etc. He could do it all, and he could do it all at the top level.

Bottom line - Lamarr didn't purely rely on making his guests squirm like Amstell did. There's no question that Lamarr could turn on his guests as quick as a flash and give them hell, but the episodes in which he had an uneasy friendliness going on with them often turned out to be just as funny, if not even funnier. The moment Lamarr turned on them was more often the icing on the cake. With Amstell it felt like he was often trying too hard to live up the reputation that the show had already established for itself. Again, Amstell was a great host and did a far better job than anyone else would have done (I mean hey, just look at the guest hosts after he finally left!).

Sean Lock was right when he said that Lamarr never really got the level of praise his hosting actually deserved. But I hear Lamarr was a pretty hard guy to get along with, so maybe he burnt too many bridges with too many higher ups in the industry.
