My review of the incredible hulk series

I recently downloaded all 21 episodes of this great series, due to the fact it does not exist on dvd in north america unfortunately. i remember i use to watch this show as a kid having seen episodes here and there but never seeing the entire series until now.

anyways ill state the obvious, season 1 is pretty awesome. its dark and more adult themed and has more fights and action. its definitely the direction that a hulk cartoon should be. its nice to see story lines taken directly from the comics and stories stretched over multiple episodes.

i enjoyed the character appearances such as ghost rider, the thing, iron man, thor and villains such as abomination, dr doom and the leader. the feud between banner/the hulk and general ross/hulk busters was great. i felt like they did a really good job during season 1 telling the origin and the struggle banner faced trying to find a cure and dealing with the monster inside.

season 2 sadly was alright but overall a letdown. its unfortunate that executives at UPN had changed the creative direction of the show and imposed a new team to write the show. first off there was too much of she-hulk, while i like her and glad see to see her pop up in episodes every now and then, i felt having her be practically the main character was stupid. the focus on the show should of been mainly on the hulk.

the show was no longer dark and often had silly story lines. it was a stupid decision to cut important and main characters which were seen in season 1 such as betty banner, genral ross, doc samson and rick jones. i also enjoyed the gamma warriors and would of liked to of seen them make a few appearances as well.

the focus of season 2 should of been on bruce banner as a fugitive running from the military with general ross hunting the hulk. banner trying to find a cure for himself and the leader trying to capture the hulk. season 2 is not all bad, it had some great ideas but just done in the wrong way. we get to see dr strange, absorbing man, bruce banner as the grey hulk. it had some good action and fights here and there, but doesnt compare anywhere near the first season.

i would of loved to of seen season 2 remain dark and the show go onto a 3rd and possibly 4th season. story lines could of included bruce banner permanently being stuck as the hulk while stile trying to find a cure, the hulk turning into intelligent hulk, betty ross finally marrying the hulk, general ross turning into the red hulk and banner/the hulk trying to cure him while rd hulk tries to kill the hulk for destroying his life. the hulk teaming up with an early team of the avengers.

i would of loved to of seen appearances/fights between the hulk and wolverine, spiderman, fantastic four again, juggernaut, rhino.

anyways wishful thinking i guess. maybe one day we will get another hulk cartoon, hopefully one that caters to the 14+ audience and remains dark. sill i cant help but love this show. season 1 id rate a 9 out of 10 and season 2 id rate a 6 out of 10.

I agree with alot of your analysis of the show and the change of direction, But alot of the plot points your discussing (mainly Red Hulk) are very new concepts, ross has been around for over 40 years but Rulk is only 3 years old so it was not possible for them to use those plotpoints at the time.

Totally agree with everything else however, more crossover with the X-men animated series or iron man at the time would have made sense as all those shows were so popular and fit in well.

I'm not sure if studio politics play into there not being any x-men crossovers, didn't want to invest the time to see if the TV studios were different of if they could not crossover x-men at the time, or if they just didn't end up doing it.

The Spider-man X-men crossover animated episode is one of my favorites and I love the Secret wars episodes as well. Modern super hero cartoons just don't stack up to these series, but the animated marvel and DC features are adult in nature and everything i could have asked for as a comic fanboy.

I think that Marvel didn't do more X-Men crossover episodes simply because of logistics and the costs. The Spider-Man crossover was apparently, really expensive to produce because the X-Men cast were based out of Canada. They had to be flown over to Los Angeles to record for Spider-Man. The reason why Storm was the only X-Men remember to participate in the Secret Wars storyline was because Iona Morris, who was the original voice of Storm before Alison Sealy-Smith took over. Basically, it was less of an hassle to get Morris since she was already based in the United States.
