Undertones in Hey Arnold we didn't notice as a kid

There use to be a list here and I was going to copy it to my friend but IMDB only holds a few discussions and deletes whatever was on the bottom of the list. So I wanted to make a brand new list and I want to see what you guys add to this. So here is my go on this:

1)

Episode: Helga on the Couch

Dr. Bliss:

Mmhmm.

Helga:

It's okay to be obsessed about him? Y'know, the shrines and stuff, the 3 AM vigils, the tantric spells?

Dr. Bliss:

As long as you're not hurting anyone, it sounds like an okay way to express yourself.

Helga:

So, animal sacrifices are out.

Dr. Bliss:

Yes, I'm afraid so.

Helga:It's okay to be obsessed about him? Y'know, the shrines and stuff, the 3 AM vigils, the tantric spells?

------------------------
Tantric Spells - (a Sanskrit word which means "woven together") is a term applied to several divergent and even contradictory schools of Hindu yoga in which the sexual union of... male and female is worshipped either in principle or in human practice.

-------------------------

2) Episode: Helga's Parrot

"Arnold, my love, my sultry preteen,
Why must I hold you only whilst I dream?
Will I be forever enslaved by your spell?
Why must I worship you and never ever tell?

Arnold, you make my girlhood tremble,
My senses all go wacky.
Some day I'll tell the world, my love,
Or my name's not Helga G. Pataki."

------------------------------

Girlhood - Private Area for a female.

Your Turn guys, what sexual or adult like themes are on Hey Arnold that we missed as a kid?

Oh yes I remember one more:

Episode: Veterans Day

Phil: I was tired and hungry, not to mention lonesome, so I stopped at a little French farm house but the farmer had gone off to join the French army and there was no one left at home except his three beautiful daughters. There was no room in the farm house but they agreed to left me stay at the barn, just when I was about to nod off there came a knock on the barn door And the oldest daughter Monique was bathed in moonlight wearing a figure flattering (couldn’t catch the next word) dress
“Oh Mister Phil” she said “the war has made me so scared and lonely”

Martin: Phil! Maybe you should skip on down to the next part of the story

Phil: Oh O yeah, yeah maybe your right (Leans over to Martin and whispers) I’ll tell you that part later

O_O

Phil said "... wearing a figure flattering diaphanous peasant dress." This means the dress was very sheer.

reply

lololol, i need to start watching this show again, wow.

reply

I didn't even remember this until I rewatched it a couple of days ago. It's amazing what they got away with back in the day. Now it's edgy if someone says 'nipple' on a kids' show.

4)

Mr. Simmons partner on the Thanksgiving Day episode.

5)

Helga seeing Arnold naked and responding almost like a grown woman would at a hot naked guy.
She definitely did not act like a 9 year old girl would.
Kinda creepy even. hahaha

Miriam and her "smoothies" um ya, regular smoothies don't make you fall asleep in weird places and make you become useless.

I freakin love Craig for making Miriam a subtle alcohlic, as a kid i thought she was tired all the time but now im like, "Dang! They actually went there"

Oh, Chocolate Boy=Crack fiend

reply

Haha Miriam thing is hilarious! I thought the same as a kid

reply

LOL I always just assumed Helga's mom was tired, but now that I am older, I have realized that she was an alcoholic.

reply

Oh my God! i thought i was the only one that she thought she was tired all the time. It makes sense now: she was hungover all the time!

reply

I always thought she was zonked on Quaaludes or Xanax

Haha...love her! She had a pretty freaky mind for a 9 yr old. I would have reacted the same way if I saw my crush naked. 

Ronnie Matthews also probably being gay, especially since he had a ring only on his right ear.
Which was really popular in the 90's.

How about the episode "Grandpa's packard" when Grandpa was flirting with the jolli olli man in drag? He didn't know it was the Jolli Olli man but still...

reply

Lol. Yeah, it's crazy to think Grandma probably has Alzheimer's or something.

Something I caught earlier: the episode where Eugene mixes up Harold and Helga's aptitude tests, after Mr. Simmons realizes that he graded them wrong, he tells Big Bob about it in his usual sensitive way. Bob walks out of the room and calls him a "throw pillow" under his breath. The way he said it, Big Bob isn't a fan of gay people.

The Emperor is not here. I speak for the Empire.

I suppose these aren't exactly "undertones," but how about the "It Girl" episode where helga spits and it ends up on the cover of "Vague"? That one made me smile.

Also, the one where Principal Wartz retires and at the karaoke bar he sings "I Will Prevail," which is a parody of "I Will Survive."

There are so many things like that....references to pop culture. I think those are some of my favorite parts. Like Yahoo soda being similar to Yoohoo chocolate milk.

That all being said, Miriam was definitely supposed to be an alcoholic. I used to watch this show when I was a kid, and like a few of you guys said, I always used to think that she was tired all the time, or just one of those crazy and disorganized cartoon characters. I'm a little ashamed to admit that I only figured out the alcoholic thing recently...I'm 21!

I see dominantly Undertones is during the episode of Arnold visit Arnie...It so obviously full of sexual tension, adult filled innuendo and even cheating...

Lulu, lila alternate character, are a tease, try to seduce arnold, even inviting him to a private swim, which would be done after arnie go to sleep..(cheating)

then...lulu aggressive way of approaching arnold and try to kissed him, even try to played with arnold feet...I mean that a lot in one episode....

It ends with all of them taking hay ride at night, without supervision...wow..

while in episode Helga Boyfriend....there is one scene in which helga watching movie in cinema, and the character in the film say something like this "cheap tramp Britney"... I thought tramp was a ban words for a children, let alone in a cartoon...hihihi..
