Signs that Arnold liked Helga back

at least on a subconscious level.

I was just watching the Halloween episode and I noticed that Arnold kept mentioning Helga's name specifically the whole time as if he was particularly concerned with her well being. Also the fact that he always hears her when she screams.

So that episode got me thinking what are some other little moments that prove that Arnold liked Helga back. I know they aren't obvious but I'm sure there are many throughout the series and I'm interested in hearing what other fans think.

There is one episode i can think of off the top of my head that hints this. In the episode when they are stuck at the school (because of the flood) Mr. Simmons is being pulled back into the school (after a failed attempt to make it to the roof) by the kids and helga goes to reach for Mr. Simmons and falls out the window. Arnold yells "no" and its the way he yells it that, to me at least says that he cares probably even more than anyone even himself relizes. I remember watching as a kid thinking that he always cared about her and probably knew all along that she liked him (way before the movie lol)

Or the fact that Arnold keeps informing Helga that's she's a good person deep Down.

Also,...
Everytime Helga does even a slightly nice thing, Arnold is always super impressed. Like in "the masquerade", "it girl", "Summer Love", and "Dinner for four". That's a huge sign right there.

Thats true. He always seemed to be the one kid who saw Helga in a different way than the other kids saw her. I bet he liked her all along.

Remember the episode where he stood up for Helga when talking to Big Patty? He said she only acts mean and nasty to cover up for her own insecurities but she's not all that bad deep down. He really understands Helga more than anybody. I love it.

Also when he sprayed Helga with water when they washed dishes at Chez Paris and winked at her.

Those are two of my favorite episodes. Arnold was the only person to ever stick up for her. It was awesome and gave me high expectations of guys lol.

Awwww...me too. I love this show! Now that you guys mention that. It made me realized how really lucky Helga was. It takes me back to me and this guy in 4th grade. He seemed alot sweet and helpful more than all the other kids in that class. I was head over heels in love with that guy, and the guy simply didn't get it. He also never last that long at that school. He moved to Chicago with his mom. At least, Arnold had stick around. I think Arnold would have been a good match for Helga. Maybe he had something that Helga was desperately craving because she never had that from home.

And I think another time you could tell that Arnold could sense Helga liking him was when they did that school play "Romeo and Juliet. She kissed him longer in that final scene more than she should have. During the final curtain call, Helga expressed her supposed "disgust" over that kissing scene, but Arnold asked why did she kissed him for so long. Her response was hilarious and it prompted Arnold to say "Whatever you say, Helga"...like he knew that she was just putting up on an act. The way he said it sounded kinda flirtatious in a way like he knows that she likes him.

It's true that Arnold wasn't like most guys in his class, while the others the guys weren't willing to play the Romeo part because of the kissing scene, Arnold accepted that part and took it like a pro. I wish it could have been the same for me. I remember in 4th grade, there were these girls asking me would I have liked my crush to be my husband someday. He overheard that and said "Nasty Girls". Now imagine if me and my crush were playing the parts as Romeo and Juliet. I bet he wouldn't have been willing to let me kiss him the way that Helga did with Arnold. He probably would have thought that was gross. Like I mentioned this before, Helga is one lucky girl!!!

Don't play games with a girl who can play better.

I think the most obvious one is from "Married" when dream!Arnold has had enough of being treated like garbage by dream!Helga, and he says that he knows she's not really as bad as she likes to pretend (and he wakes up right before dream!Helga is about to confess her feelings for him), and he ponders the idea that being married to Helga might not be as bad as everyone thinks.

Okay I thought of another episode on this subject that I don't think anyone has mentioned and that's "Beamed" - when Arnold hits her with the ball and she loses her memory. In that epsiode he went out of his way to feed her, read her homework, tuck her in bed, he rushed over the next day to walk her to school and even after he knew she was better he still wanted to walk her home, I think he always wanted to do those things for her but it's just that since she had anmesia she was letting him.

Ive been watching Hey Arnold since 96. As a longtime fan I agree with all the things mentioned. The other night I was watching Arnold visits Arnie and in the episode all the classmates of Arnie were complete opposite of his friends
Lulu Arnies girlfriend who looks exactly like Lila who was Arnolds crush was very um forward in her flirting especially for a 9 year old lol
Then Arnold bumps into Hilda which looks exactly like Helga she was softer and gentler which as we see Arnold liked immediately 😄
Also she had a crush on Arnie when in Arnolds reality she has a crush on him.
We find out later that it was Arnolds dream and when he saw Helga being herself he hugged her

I think that while Arnold would never want her to change her personality he knows there is another side that he would like to know

Funny story, I just wrote a mini paper on why Helga is the way she is and how she got that way and this was a small part of it. The episode "Married" really is what led me to believe that he knew how she felt. When he confronted her and told her she wasn't as bad as she acted, well he's said that tons of times (which also goes to prove the point) but it's the fact that his dream Helga goes on to tell him how she feels that makes me believe that he knows subconsciously how she feels.

How about the episode where Lila rejects him and he offers to walk Helga home? I know he was probably vulnerable and on the rebound, but he still seemed pretty hopeful that she'd say yes.



Anytime Helga does or says something even remotely nice and kind, Arnold becomes super impressed. He can also see right through Helga's mean and "tough girl" nature.

But then again, Arnold always likes to see he best in people.
