What ever happened to the TV mini-series?

I remember in the mid 90’s all the way on through the early years of this millennium, it seems like the big three TV networks were always making heavily-hyped, multi-part movies, which were usually shown during the May sweeps period. But now, it seems like that trend has died out, as I can’t recall seeing any ads or promos for any new mini-series. Granted, I don’t watch nearly as much TV (or, to be more specific, programs on TV (I still watch plenty of DVD’s)), as I did back in those days, but it still seems to me like the TV mini-series (at least on the three major networks) has become extinct. Does anyone know why?

There's just too much media out there, is my guess. The networks aren't just competing with each other and the independents, but are competing with all of the online media outlets as well. Movies are now available on demand for a dollar or two. How do you compete with that?

Having said that, Hallmark Entertainment released another high budget made for TV movie last Christmas. So, they're still in the game, though I'm not sure they're doing the fantasy thing anymore.

I hope that helps.

Premium cable is where one finds them now, in the US.
