Debra Would Have Left Ray.

...They have have zero common interests, Ray is unable to communicate & is completely uninteresting as a person, cowers towards his mother, fails to stick up for Debra, is an absolute momma's boy - and in addition to all that: is completely inattentive, lazy, and always wanting sex. A very unappealing husband (Debra has her issues too).
I never found them convincing as a couple given Debra's strong willness. In fact, I find hard to believe that Debra would have even married Ray in the first place. There meeting & wedding flashback episodes I always found especially phony eg. Debra's happiness & professed devotion. Although, perhaps she only found out what Ray was like after she married him; after which Ray saw no need to keep being his "best".

In contrast, I found the bickering Marie & Frank convincing - as they came from a time when a woman's role and identity was largely limited to a homemaker, and a woman was expected to marry the father of her child as Marie had done after discovering she was pregnant with Robert.

Or Ray would have left her because of her snotty attitude

People like to get after Ray because he wanted sex, but she was snooooty

Ray and his family was exactly what she deserved. God she was a piece of crap. I loved that show when it was on, but after attempting to rewatch it couple of years ago, I don't know what I saw in it 20+ years ago.

Well, in real life, most days Ray wasn't the total asshat we see in the episodes. They only filmed those days that were actually interesting - you know, when Ray was a jerk or Debra was princess.

Most days, Ray and Debra got along famously and were devoted to each other.

Now, Frank and Marie on the other hand were another story.

What's that based on? Debra was always referring to Ray's character as inattentive and lazy throughout those unseen days. It would usually take the conclusion of an episode for them to reach some understanding, before reverting back to Ray's inattentiveness and laziness for the next episode for the benefit of "comedy".

If every single day of their lives was like one of their episodes, then yeah I think they would have killed each other and/or themselves! While on the other hand, them just getting on and having a nice day would make a boring episode.

It was revealed many times throughout the series that every day of their married lives was like an episode of the show - that Ray was always a shit husband. Don't know why that's such a sensitive point here - did I wander into an MRA seminar? This weird assertion that some sort of alternative reality existed within the show - where Ray is the exact opposite of what we saw every week - has no basis.

There's other ways to derive comedy other than relationship bickering. That gets old, and often gets pushed to the point of wondering why the hell they're even toghether - as was the case for this show.

Did you get the impression that this was meant to be a portrayal of real life?

Wait, what? I thought this series was biographical!!!!!

reply

Lol!

Mensa this ain't.

Ray would've murdered Debra. What a disgusting, useless creature!

reply

You're absolutely right. I was never a fan of the show, and it was because of her. Once in a while I would tune in, and every time it was just all about her verbally and emotionally whipping him. She was a miserable shrew, and not even attractive enough to make a guy put up with it for one date, let alone his entire life.

reply

The first couple of seasons it wasn't so bad, but in later seasons it was just awful. And the writers would always let her get away with it and make Ray out to be the bad guy.

reply

I am with you that they didn't fit. First off, anyone who would call their spouse a jackass all the time is awful. However, Ray was a jackass! He was a mama's boy, but she encouraged it by not standing up to her in-laws and allowing them to constantly babysit. It was a perfect, dysfunctional relationship.

I thought Debra was absolutely gorgeous, though. I suspect Ray was constantly reminding himself of that.

reply

I liked her until she started getting plastic surgery then she lost that hot wife next door quality.

reply

She probably would have left him. And to hurt her in laws she would have moved with the kids somewhere far away.

That said I thought she was a bitch and Ray's mother made it impossible to watch sometimes.

I get why Ray was so immature at times he was just trying to have some fun before being nagged and overwhelmed by the women in his life.
