What would you use today?

I realize people still read newspapers but circulation isn't what it once was. When thinking about this show recently I wondered if it were to get a reboot would a newspaper work and if not then what would you go with.

I'm sure the concept of a newspaper is still universal but is the feeling of getting it every day ubiquitous enough for people to relate with the show?

Does anything work as well? I don't think any of tomorrow's TV news, news radio, internet news today works but maybe I'm just not creative enough.

Just wondering if anyone else had thought about this.

I have thought about it, and I think the boring/depressing but best answer is that there just isn't any media with the tactility and appeal of an old-fashioned newspaper, so a contemporary reboot would simply be a bad idea.

Nothing lasts forever... :)

A newspaper could work really well for a modern reboot. The protagonist despite having a laptop, smartphone etc. still enjoys reading the morning paper with his breakfast.

His friends/co-stars tease him that he is always one day behind in the news, until one day the newspaper gods reward him for his loyalty and he starts getting tomorrow's paper.

Amazon could reboot this, and have the Washington Post (also owned by Bezos) be the paper. That would allow them to cross promote.

Good point.

Although, it would still have to be a more local paper than the WaPo, with more focus on local news, because he can only save people in one city.

I've thought about it, and I love the idea of a reboot for EE (it was one of my favorites on TV as a teenager), especially with the way a lot of shows are these days. I just don't think it's too logical. The thing about having a magical newspaper is that it's portable without being too widespread. Most people today with even the smallest access to technology and a vague sense of curiosity can find out a great deal in a matter of minutes. I'm sure that if any paper, then or now, got that kind of circulation, nobody would ever dream of them going out of business. The modern equivalent of Gary would have to work a lot harder to hide his secret, and that'd almost certainly conflict with the demands of the Paper's equivalent, probably frequently.

Could be a news app on his phone, or a news magazine website that's his homepage on his laptop/computer, such as MSN News.

Many people get their news on the internet now, having a favorite site they visit every day or have as a home page. That would be his "tomorrow's news" source.

The reboot could work with a digital e-paper. The cat could still appear at the door but without the physical newspaper bright and early at 6:30 AM. When he is let inside he heads straight for the laptop or pad and meows incessantly until Gary (lets assume for the sake of argument that it's still Gary) turns it on and starts scanning the news articles. Gary would simply grab his smartphone which has the mysterious app with "tomorrow's news" in it when he scrambles out of the apartment so that he can check on his progress as he proceeds to change events.

Actually, using a newspaper would give the show more of a mysterious and nostalgic kind of feel, especially if the main character is very much into modern technology. It might also inspire them to take their time and appreciate the world around them.
