Jump The Shark

Did a quick search, didn't find any thread on this subject.

The question is easy, when (if ever) do you think this series Jumped The Shark?

For me it was the episode when John gets sent to Vietnam. To many stupid things happend in that episode.

Even though, I would have liked a second season (or more). I think it would have gotten a second season if it was on FOX as a lead in/out for X-Files insted of NBC.

"White Rabbit" wasn't a bad episode and moved the story arc along, but it was genuinely silly how John rushed out the Viet Cong encampment on full alert and seemed bullet proof. I think they were trying to kick start the show after the mid season lull. I don't think Dark Skies turned bad and has held up surprisingly well, but it never really found its footing and like Firefly was unlucky in attracting a large enough audience in time.

reply

That episode has been mentioned before; also because it was the one that introduced "36 of DD" (Star Trek Voyager mocking reference) who went onto become John's love interest because the writers couldn't figure out how to write two characters who are in a committed relationship. Instead they had to ditch Kim and give John a blond bombshell who's Russian except without the accent.

reply

She spoke seemingly fluent enough Russian in her second episode. And what about the next couple of episodes where John agonised over Kim being lost to the Hive, with Kim gravitating towards Steel, with her ultimately losing her love towards her child because of Hive influence? I quite liked that on repeat viewing.

reply

Jumping the shark during season 1 is never a good thing.

reply

Dark Skies never really jumped the shark per se, much like Firefly really.

reply

I'm with you on this, Dark Skies didn't have a jump the shark moment. My personal view is that the whole Ganglion thing was a bit too contrived and didn't sit too well with the producers. YMMV

reply

It never really jumped the shark for me. I was fascinated by it and wish it could have finished it's planned story arc (maybe if it had come along later it might have lasted longer). But I really didn't like Juliet and she did spoil it for me

reply

I don't think Jeri Ryan/Juliet Stewart spoiled much and while I disliked how Megan Ward's character ended up as, after viewing Dark Skies some years back on DVD, Jeri's addition was perhaps a symptom of the show runners getting desperate and it didn't pay off as well as her more famous addition to VOY?

reply

I'm a fan of Jeri Ryan - particularly in Shark, Body of Proof and the movie Victim of Beauty - but, I just wasn't really keen on Juliet. Strange

reply

I don't think they JTS at that time but there were a number of unlikely moments in that episode that stretched believability. It was definitely the worst episode. The composition of th MJ-12 board in the last episode set themselves up for some awkward explanations assuming the show continued which unfortunately it didn't.

reply

It was a good show with an even better premise, but it was not on long enough to have a definite jump the shark era. The closes you get to one is when they decided to push Megan Ward out and brought in big tits Jeri Ryan hoping that the change would boost the ratings. It's not so much a jump the shark moment where a show runs out of ideas but instead an act of desperation to save a freshman show from being cancelled.
