I must acquire this series! Why is there no DVD set? How about anywhere where I can download the episodes? I once met Robert Smigel and he told me that there was and probably is still no interest in the show, so no DVD will ever come out. I, for one, would definitely buy a box set (I mean, there were only a handful of episodes, how hard would it be for a box set?)
They are not going to release any tupe of DVD Box Set if they do not think it will be able to pull a profit, which is what they obviously think. This show was one for like two months 8 years ago and although Dana Carvey is a pretty well known guy, he hasn't hit superstardom that would interest people to buy said Box Set who may have never seen or even heard of this series. The only reason Ben Stiller's show was released was his surge in popularity and they wanted to capitalize on that. Substitute Dana Carvey with Mike Meyers and the thing would've been out for quite some time now. Is it fair? I suppose not, but it's business.
I vaguely remember the first episode and would be very eager to purchase a DVD just off the strength of the writers. This has what must have been at the time the most promising staff of comedy writers when you consider they went on to be writers for The Daily Show (Colbert), Chappelle Show (Chappelle himself), The Chris Rock Show (Louis CK), Late night with Conan O'brien (Glaser), Mr Show (Stoyanov and Stamatopoulos), and hollywood favorite Charlie Kaufman. And that was just the rookies, The Showbiz Veterans on staff were Carvey and Smigel writers for SNL and Feresten who did Seinfeld, the Simpsons, Letterman, and SNL. Thats an amazing writing team and if they marketed the DVD to play up all these connections, I think it could sell very well. I've seen movie advertisements playing up the fact the producer of a current movie once produced a popular movie years ago, so why not do the same with the writers?
Here, here! Thank you, Freeman, for your well-put statement about the writing staff of this show.
Considering the glut of TV shows that did not fare well (and certainly not with such a staff of writers or performers) that are being released on DVD, I cannot understand why this show is being held back.
Colbert and Carrell, not to mention Carvey & Smigel are reason enough to release a DVD set. To dismiss the entire staff's work on this short-lived and misunderstood genius program is to underestimate the humor intelligence of an audience that lives and still laughs today.
I for one would be first in line to purchase a DVD of their one (and regretfully only) season. I get it, as do many others.
The Dana Carvey Show wasn't cancelled due to lack of an audience. He was cancelled because he pissed off all his sponsors. I loved that show. It ranks right next to The Muppet Show as one of my all time faves.
For anybody looking for this great show, I found epsiodes 2-6 at http://www.myspleen .com (awesome site) for download through bittorrent. You'll have to make an account (free of course) and it's well worth it. Just remember to share once you get them:)
Yeah, I went there and download the episodes. They are pretty funny but really dated and kind of dumb sometimes. Dana Carvey was a bit ahead of his time but the real shame is that if the show wasn't on like 8 pm and instead aired at 10pm it would have ran for 5 years or more. Who thought they could get away with chopping off Princess Diana's head and having her torso dance around during prime time was an idiot. Family programming was still around in 1996, not really anymore. This show would be rather tame and childish if it aired today. But again I laughed and can't understand why Dukes of Hazard in on DVD but not this show?
P.S. Thanks Damaged for the tip. I also saw that some dude was selling the first through seventh episodes on eBay. He claims the 7th was never aired so who knows how the heck he got it, but if someone is looking to buy them and then post them on a peer share torrent the world would owe them a favor.
damn, it's too bad that show was cancelled. i've downloaded the episodes and they're great, too bad it not includes the first one... =/ I wonder if that eBay guy does have that unaired episode... if it really is an unaired episode, because people don't really remember what aired and what not.
But they really got great reasons to release a DVD - Steve Carell, then a rookie comedian, now a comedy star after an appearance in the hit comedy THE 40 YEARS OLD VIRGIN, plus great comedy movies like BRUCE ALMIGHTY with Jim Carrey and ANCHORMAN with Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd (also from 40 YEARS OLD VIRGIN), Vince Vaughn, Jack Black and Ben Stiller. Also there Robert Smigel, writer of SNL and cartoon animator for SNL, who also did a fun voice role in the movie LITTLE NICKY as the talking dog LOL Next, there's Stephen Colbert, DAILY SHOW writer and also now has his own Comedy Central Show - THE COLBERT REPORT, which is pretty good and funny show.
Bad news, I think myspleen is down and after accidentally deleting the Dana Carvey show from my pc I don't think anyone else is hosting it. The show will be lost until the geniuses at NBC unlock the vault.
Good News! Torrent with episodes 2-6 available on torrentspy right now. Still downloading and it looks like it's going to take a while but I will seed for a while if anyone's still interested.
I live in Sweden, and I bet no one in this country has a copy of yhis show. :) However, I was able to find a seller of rare video materials on dvd-r, and just paid US$15 for a copy of 7 episodes. Apparently legal, if I understand the time-shift legal precendent correctly. Check it out on http://www.dvdtribe.com/ Thanks a lot for mentioning myspleen.com you guys, I wouldn't have found out about the dvd-r otherwise! So here I return the favor. :)
I actually have a DVD with 7 episodes and what seem to be some unaired clips, got it from a friend who's into trading and recording tv. The quality is a little crappy, since it was obviously recorded off a broadcast TV feed in 1996 to VHS and then sometime much later converted to DVD.
Most of the skits are extremely dated, but it's interesting to see where some of these extremely talented people were back 10 years ago.
thanks for the tip, bjorn! i have 3 or 4 episodes on VHS that i taped off the air when this show was originally broadcast and have been searching for the complete series for quite some time! i just ordered it and can't wait to see it again.
oh yeah... and for anyone else interested in seeing clips of the show for free, there are a ton of them up at youtube.com!
Here's an idea for the studio heads to make money off the DVD rename it "The Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell Show. Hosted By Dana Carvey." Guaranteed to rake in millions.
