the classic cosby show (1980's)?

I'm actally alote more familiar with this show than "the old one", but it doesn't seem to come near the popularity of 1980's show. does this have anything to do with the 1980's show? i don't think there is, feels odd that there are the same two leading actors in both shows, and almost the same title(!), without having any kind of succsession with the previous show. (b.t.w, can't believe this didn't end untill the year 2000.)
