just watched the first episode.... question

I just watched the first episode and i was disappointed the tv show didn't pick up where it left off on the movie. Also it seems like the tv show copied alot of the scenes in the movie.

example when cher talks about orange juice for breakfast 2 her father. scene was exactly the same as the movie.

My question is.. is the whole tv series like that?? just basically a rewrite/copy of the movie??
