I was really into this thing until the part where the mother squid grieves for her offspring. Squids don't bond with their youngs. They just lay eggs and move on. I've never read the book so I don't know if this is something that Benchley actually wrote or if it was done for the movie. Total Jaws 3-D rip off. BTW great whites don't grieve for their young either lol.

Well in real life the Humboldt squid is a very dangerous and aggressive animal so I guess the film makers wanted to show that by adding certain amount of revenge into it.
The squid was represented to be a hell of a lot smarter and deadlier than Doctor Talley had believed so by making the squid seem to have feelings made her a more deadly antagonist for Talley and Whip.
