Graves

Near the end of the film when the Giant Squid breaks free of the boat after being tranqalised, does anyone question why it decided to attack Graves (who had left most likely hours earlier on his dingy and therefore would have been much nearer shore than is portrayed by the film) rather than the boat full of people who were right in front of the Squid...

Surely it would have attacked the boat first as it was right infront of it and completely helpless...

Yeah, but I'm guessing the squid was realy pissed at Graves and wanted some payback.

Well moments after it dove backwards into the sea it's huge eyes look sharply around as if it making up it's mind before taking off. It went after Graves because I guess it figured the Privateer wasn't going anywhere as Graves was. That's why later onwards however early in the morning it returned to the boat grabs and eats Manning and then heaves herself onto the stern transom of the boat. Mission completed because Graves thought he could selfishly save himself only to have the Squid sense and track him down.
